Racial differences were seen where Asians had the highest mean semen concentrations (69.2 × 106/mL) while blacks had the lowest (51.3 × 106/mL).
Data suggest that Black men have lower mean ejaculate volumes, sperm concentration, and total motile sperm counts.
Semen Quality and Male Infertility
The sperm count in white and cloudy semen is better than watery and clear semen. Watery semen may sometimes be considered as an indicator of fertility issues in males.
Fertility is most likely if the semen discharged in a single ejaculation (ejaculate) contains at least 15 million sperm per milliliter. Too little sperm in an ejaculation might make it more difficult to get pregnant because there are fewer candidates available to fertilize the egg.
Retrieved May 2, 2023, from www.marchofdimes.org/peristats. In the United States, the highest fertility rates (per 1,000 women ages 15-44) during 2018-2020 (average) were to Hispanic women (64.8), followed by blacks (62.6), American Indian/Alaska Natives (60.8), Asian/Pacific Islanders (55.6) and Whites (55.3).
Racial differences were seen where Asians had the highest mean semen concentrations (69.2 × 106/mL) while blacks had the lowest (51.3 × 106/mL).
Peak male fertility is around 25-29 years old. Sperm quality begins to decline at 30. At 45, men begin to experience a significant decrease in semen volume. Older men can also take longer to conceive a child.
A trained expert checks your sperm count, their shape, movement, and other characteristics. In general, if you have a higher number of normal-shaped sperm, it means you have higher fertility. But there are plenty of exceptions to this. A lot of guys with low sperm counts or abnormal semen are still fertile.
While there is no definite age at which male ejaculation ceases, it has been suggested that it may happen when a man reaches his late 40s or early 50s. It is important to note, however, that this is not a universal rule and some men may continue to ejaculate at a later age.
For healthy semen samples collected between 5:00am and 7:30am were found to exhibit a statistically higher sperm concentration, total sperm count and a higher percentage of normally shaped sperm, compared to samples produced later in the day. Sperm motility was not influenced by the time of sample production.
Danish men had the lowest sperm concentrations whilst Finnish men had the highest [14]. Such geographical differences in semen characteristics as presented by these studies remain unexplained.
Sperm competition is the competitive process between spermatozoa of two or more different males to fertilize the same egg during sexual reproduction. Competition can occur when females have multiple potential mating partners.
Some have found that married Black and Latina women are more likely to be infertile than White women 4,5. Black and Latina women are less likely to seek fertility treatment than their White counterparts 6. Also, Black women take more years to seek fertility treatment than White women 6.
These studies showed that women of Asian descent had lower average BMI, good embryo quality and number of embryos produced, normal hormone levels, and healthier diets which usually contribute to higher fertility.
It's true that fertility is genetic, and there actually are some people who can be classified as “super” fertile. This is all dependent on sperm and egg health. One study on the topic classified super fertility as having a monthly fecundity rate (the ability to get pregnant) of 60% or greater.
The highest fertility levels are observed in Niger (13.6 children on average), South Sudan (13.5 children), Chad (12.1 children) and in the Sahelian countries more generally. In only four countries (South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia) is male fertility below 6 children per man.
Results: White men produced greater volumes of semen on average, however, Asian men had higher sperm concentrations and total sperm count.
Finally, the egg can affect which sperm wins the race with the chemicals it releases in the follicular fluid that surrounds the egg. That's the part which contains the chemical breadcrumbs eggs use to attract and guide sperm to their goal.
Two mechanisms can operate to ensure that only one sperm fertilizes the egg. In many cases, a rapid depolarization of the egg plasma membrane, which is caused by the fusion of the first sperm, prevents further sperm from fusing and thereby acts as a fast primary block to polyspermy.
Age and sperm
Men younger than 40 have a better chance of fathering a child than those older than 40. The quality of the sperm men produce seems to decline as they get older. Most men make millions of new sperm every day, but men older than 40 have fewer healthy sperm than younger men.
Among the largest ejaculates relative to body size belongs to the boar Sus scrofa. Lüpold said that males of this boar "seem to produce ejaculates of over 50 billion sperm, which is well over 100 times a human ejaculate." European hare males also have some of the greatest sperm numbers relative to their body size.
Some studies suggest that moderate ejaculation (2–4 times per week) is associated with a lower prostate cancer risk. However, ejaculating more often doesn't mean your cancer risk drops even more.
Studies show that the average length of time that sperm live, once ejaculated or inserted into the female reproductive system, is around three days. This depends on where she is in her menstrual cycle, however—with just the right timing, stronger sperm could last up to five days.
