The X and Y chromosomes, also known as the
It's all about Dad's genes
A man's X and a woman's X combine to become a girl, and a man's Y combines with a woman's X to become a boy. But if the sperm don't have equal Xs and Ys, or if other genetic factors are at play, it can affect the sex ratio.
Men determine the sex of a baby depending on whether their sperm is carrying an X or Y chromosome. An X chromosome combines with the mother's X chromosome to make a baby girl (XX) and a Y chromosome will combine with the mother's to make a boy (XY).
Most people feel as though they look more like their biological mom or biological dad. They may even think they act more like one than the other. And while it is true that you get half of your genes from each parent, the genes from your father are more dominant, especially when it comes to your health.
All men inherit a Y chromosome from their father, which means all traits that are only found on the Y chromosome come from dad, not mom. The Supporting Evidence: Y-linked traits follow a clear paternal lineage.
Males normally have an X and a Y chromosome (XY). A male inherits an X chromosome from his mother and a Y chromosome from his father. The picture above therefore shows the chromosomes of a male as the last pair of chromosomes (XY). Sometimes, there is a change in one copy of a gene which stops it from working properly.
Physical features. Physical features such as hair color, hair texture, hairline, skin, and varicose veins are inherited from your mother.
Personality Traits
For example, if the father is an independent thinker or risk-taker, it's likely his daughter will have some of those same qualities. Other personality traits such as intelligence, empathy, creativity, and leadership skills can also be inherited from the father.
Genetically, you actually carry more of your mother's genes than your father's. That's because of little organelles that live within your cells, the mitochondria, which you only receive from your mother.
Specifically, the research shows that although we inherit equal amounts of genetic materials from our parents – i.e., the mutations that make us who we are instead of some other person – we actually “use” more of the DNA that we inherit from our fathers.
While historically, there have been about 105 boys born for every 100 girls worldwide — which creates a “sex ratio at birth” of 1.05 — the share of boy babies has increased in recent decades. 2011 data from the World Bank show the global sex ratio at birth is now 1.07, or 107 boys born for every 100 girls.
Deep penetration, for example doggy style, means the male sperm that can swim faster start their race closer to the cervix and are more likely to reach the egg first, resulting in a boy. To try and conceive a girl, Shettles suggested avoiding deep penetration, favoring the missionary position.
The father has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, can give either his X or Y chromosome. The egg (from the mother) already contains an X chromosome. Therefore the sex of a baby is determined by the X or Y chromosome of the sperm cell from the father.
Female genetic superiority: when it comes to survival, two X chromosomes beat an X and a Y. In his new book 'Better Half', Dr. Sharon Moalem explains the survival advantage that allows women to better overcome biological challenges throughout their lives than men.
Your children inherit their eye colors from you and your partner. It's a combination of mom and dad's eye colors – generally, the color is determined by this mix and whether the genes are dominant or recessive. Every child carries two copies of every gene – one comes from mom, and the other comes from dad.
Winning by a Nose
Two large-nosed parents are likely to produce a large-nosed baby, and two small-nosed parents to produce a small-nosed baby. However, when a large-nosed father produces a child through a small-nosed mother, the baby can have a medium-sized nose, due to incomplete dominance.
While women do inherit 50% of their DNA from each parent, men inherit about 51% from their mother and only 49% from their father.
Studies suggest that while your genes may determine up to 80 percent of your weight and body shape, environment and personal choice still play a significant role. So even if you're a dead ringer for your mother in old family photos, it doesn't mean you'll enter middle age with the same body.
A baby may have the blood type and Rh factor of either parent, or a combination of both parents. Rh factors follow a common pattern of genetic inheritance. The Rh-positive gene is dominant (stronger) and even when paired with an Rh-negative gene, the positive gene takes over.
Virtues such as honesty, integrity and tolerance are most likely to come from mothers while courage, laziness and a good sense of direction come from fathers, a study found.
To conceive with a girl, an X chromosome linked sperm from your partner needs to get to your egg first. If a Y linked sperm gets in before an X, then you will have a boy. It's important to remember that it is always the man who determines the sex of the baby.
Since sperm are equally divided into X and Y chromosome sperm, the chances of having a boy or a girl should be equal. So why do some families have all girls or all boys? Each time a sperm meets an ovum, there is a 50% chance that it will make a boy and a 50% chance that it will make a girl.
Nature is designed to favour the conception of boys from September to November and girls from March to May because of an evolutionary mechanism aimed at keeping the overall sex ratio as near to 50:50 as possible, the scientists said.
