On June 16, 1778, Lord John Grey tells Jamie Fraser that he had sex with his wife Claire when they believed Jamie was dead.
After Claire is arrested on suspicion of spying, John convinces Claire to marry him so he can protect her. One night, Claire and John sleep together; afterwards, they both acknowledge: they only had sex as a way to be closer to Jamie.
Grey's first lover is Hector, a twenty-year-old lieutenant in his regiment. Grey is still with the 46th Regiment at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, but is prevented from fighting by his brother Lord Melton. Hector dies in the battle.
Clearly he still loves Claire, understands what she did, and forgives her for it - but here, in this passage, he admits he is human. He admits how difficult it is for him to keep his vow to forgive her. Not that he wouldn't forgive her - of course he would. But he acknowledges just how *hard* it is to do so.
It happens toward the end of the seventh book and into the eighth. I've seen a lot of people get to An Echo in the Bone recently, and they're shocked to find out that Claire and Lord John Grey marry.
Since Bree wouldn't clearly tell him why Shane broke up with her, John talks to Shane himself, and comes to a realization. In the season finale, John tells Bree that he loves her, but she rejects him, denying her own feelings and leaving their friendship on less-than-stellar terms. Their future is currently unknown.
Jamie Kissed Lord John After He Refused His Body
In the show, it ended at that, to deviate from the audience's expectation, and to focus instead on true friendship and compassion. But in the book, Jamie kissed Lord John after he refused his body, intimately but not in a sexual way.
Did you guess Lord John Grey? Because yes, Claire and Lord John end up married in book seven, and yes, they drunkenly (and full of grief for the loss of Jamie, whom they both love with all of their heart) consummate that marriage. And then Jamie shows up alive and well!
The day after their wedding, John gives Claire a large chest of medical equipment as a wedding present. Claire, remembering a similar anniversary gift Jamie had given to her a decade earlier, faints. A week after her marriage to Lord John, she and John drunkenly sleep together.
Their relationship became irrevocably altered, however, when Grey's feelings surpassed those of a friend, let alone that of a prison governor for one of his charges, and he made the mistake of acting on his attraction. Jamie rejected him completely, and their relationship was shattered.
“He's about 25,” Gabaldon said. It's an interesting response. If you're up to date on the series, then you know that Jamie is not dead at the age of 25.
Brianna ends up asking John to marry her as a way of avoiding being proposed to by a total stranger, which—actually, scratch that. Brianna threatens to out John as gay if he doesn't marry her, he gets understandably pissed, she apologizes, and he eventually agrees to the engagement after a brief bonding session.
Jamie marries Claire to keep her from falling into the hands of the evil Captain "Black Jack" Randall. They have one child, Faith, who doesn't survive birth; an adopted son named Fergus; and a daughter, Brianna.
It was there that the friendship began to blossom over weekly chats. It was over one of these chats that John professed his feelings for Jamie. Even though Jamie was unable to return the romantic sentiment it's proven as time goes on that Jamie does love John, similar to the way that Claire loves Frank upon her return.
Given how close Lord John is with the Frasers, it seems likely at some point he will finally accept Claire and Brianna are time travellers even if he doesn't truly understand it. Aside from Lord John, Young Ian (John Bell) knows his aunt Claire is a time traveller, acutely aware she is not from this time.
So, technically, Claire has three husbands in the Outlander books. However, there is only one man for her: Jamie.
The pair fall deeply in love with a strong sexual chemistry after they are forced to marry for Claire's protection. Throughout the course of the series, their love for one another is depicted.
Claire chooses Frank for 20 years until his death and then she finds out Jamie survived Culloden. She heads back to the past to choose Jamie for a second time. There's no way Claire and Jamie will choose someone other than themselves after this. They are endgame, and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
Fergus apparently knows Claire is a time traveler in Outlander. Diana Gabaldon mentions now and then on social media that Fergus knows Claire is a time traveler. This is something that happens off-book in the series. Fergus and Marsali have both learned the truth, which is important for later books.
Not only has Jamie never traveled to the future yet, he won't travel to the future. No, the ghost doesn't count.
When Jamie goes to jail for illegally dueling Black Jack Randall in Paris, he's imprisoned in the Bastille. Claire, who miscarried their daughter Faith, goes to meet the king and plead for him to free Jamie so they can return to Scotland.
Claire realises that she had fled because she was afraid that Jamie wouldn't choose her, but she now knows that her future is with Jamie and she will stay.
Lord John Grey is known as a chivalrous character subjected to living in a time that is unaccepting of him. However, along his way, he makes great friends with the Frasers, and time and time again shows his loyalty to Jamie. That said, Lord John Grey is not a perfect man, nor a perfect gentleman as he tries to be.
It's in chapter 59 of Voyager.
Jamie does not sleep with Malva in Outlander
The story comes out over the course of A Breath of Snow and Ashes. Malva makes her story about Jamie being the father of her unborn baby convincing.
