Over the course of Buffy, Spike falls in love with the Slayer, reacquires his soul to prove himself to Buffy and dies a hero in the show's series finale.
Spike and Buffy. Spike's interest in Buffy was completely subconscious at first; he had helped her to defeat Angelus, and was only later informed of his attraction by Drusilla when the pair traveled to Brazil. Drusilla's abilities caused her to foresee Spike's devotion to the Slayer.
Buffy finally told Spike that she loved him — the first time she used the words "I love you" romantically to anyone since Angel —, but Spike replied: "No you don't, but thanks for saying it," and told her to leave him behind.
It is learned that Spike has been in love with Buffy since they teamed up to save the world during the "Becoming, Part Two," but he only realizes his feelings for her in "Out of My Mind."
He gives Buffy the amulet and offers to be the one to use it, but then finds out about Buffy's relationship with Spike, and that he's no longer the only vamp around with a soul. Bit of a tough visit for Angel. Spike ends up using the amulet, sacrificing himself to save the day and defeat The First.
Though their romance (for lack of a better word) is tumultuous, audiences couldn't get enough of their intense passion on-screen and fiery feelings for one another, and though Buffy refused to acknowledge she had fallen in love with Spike, it was obvious to all.
In November, the activist chimed in on the great debate over whether Angel or Spike was the “right” man for Buffy. To be fair, Angel was the right boyfriend for Buffy coming into her power. Spike was the right man to be with as she became the power.
Angel isn't just Buffy's first love, he's treated as her soulmate. However, Buffy isn't the first blonde to catch Angel's eye. The first relationship that Angel had was with his vampire sire, and eventual mother of his child, Darla. Darla and Angel reigned destruction for centuries until Angel was saddled with a soul.
Angel told Buffy this at the last minute. He confessed he loved her completely, but they couldn't be together when it cost her life and the people they still needed to help against the evil forces. Angel and Buffy shared one last desperate kiss before the day was ultimately turned back and he was once again a vampire.
To Buffy, Spike is dirty and evil; in her mind, there's no saving or redeeming him. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 19, "Seeing Red", Spike sexually assaults Buffy, which is a shocking moment for them both that proves just how dangerous their relationship is.
He still had some humanity in him. The Judge could have burned him if he wanted to (but not Angel). Spike showed kindness without his soul and he fell in love with Buffy without his soul.
In "Seeing Red," Spike goes to Buffy searching for forgiveness after having sex with Anya. Buffy is hurt and angry. She tells him she could never trust him enough to love him. He attempts to appeal to her, and when she says no (repeatedly) and pushes him away, he attacks.
Do Spike and Faye Like Each Other Romantically? Faye absolutely might have had romantic feelings, but Spike was too caught up in his past to see anything but a hindrance in his longing for Julia. In fact, a major reason why he was so harsh to Faye was because she reminded him so much of her.
Spike And Drusilla Have A Stronger Connection
By the end of the series, Spike and Buffy have clearly established a close connection. However, the bond between the two wasn't on the same level as the sire bond between Spike and Dru.
During his time as a Red Dragon enforcer, Spike worked closely with his colleague and friend, Vicious, who was in a relationship with Julia. Julia and Spike eventually fell in love, beginning an affair that led them both to try to leave the syndicate.
He loves cooking and cleaning. Freddie Prinze Jr has opened up about his marriage to Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar, revealing his cooking and cleaning skills are integral to all these years together.
Canon is that Angel loves Buffy, but due to the curse on him, they cannot be together because if truly happy, he goes back to being Angelus.
Glory, a god from a hell dimension, wanted to get back to her world and needed the Key to do it. Because of this, monks changed the energy into someone that Buffy would protect--a little sister. Like most teenagers, Dawn has some behavioral issues, especially after finding out what she used to be.
Although many fans did not think much of Riley as a character, he was the closest thing to a genuine boyfriend for Buffy, and he would have given her a somewhat normal life, which was what she had always wanted.
By the end of the issue, Buffy comes to the conclusion that she cannot have a baby.
Also, Buffy finally realizes she's in love with Spike, and the two start a relationship that remains stable across the season. Despite their extremely toxic past, Spike ends up being Buffy's best boyfriend yet. Their relationship is probably the most supportive and healthy she had in canon.
While this moment is absolutely heartbreaking, Spike's purpose has now been fulfilled. He saves the world and protects Buffy, truly earning the title of a “champion.” Buffy recognizes his sacrifice and tells him that she loves him because he deserves to hear it.
Angel: “That I'm okay. That losing Buffy didn't kill me. That I could deal with it. In all those years, no-one ever mattered, not like she did, and now she's gone forever.”
After that momentous night, however, Angel lost his soul and turned into a blood-lusting killing machine, a frightening metaphor for how your first time can often be more traumatic than romantic. Angel eventually regained his soul, and he and Buffy shared many more intimate moments before the series's conclusion.
