Ring-bearers In total, the One Ring existed for c. 4867 years and was held by nine people, five of whom were hobbits. Sauron was by far the one to carry it for the most time (c. 1850 years), followed by Gollum (478 years), Bilbo (60 years), Frodo (17 years) and Isildur (2 years).
The One Ring first appeared in Tolkien's 1937 prequel novel, The Hobbit, where Bilbo -- Frodo's uncle -- found the Ring while lost in a Goblin tunnel. However, the Ring wasn't the only thing that Bilbo found because a creature named Gollum lived deep in the tunnels.

Tolkien suggested that Sauron did not discover where the Three were hidden, though he guessed that they were given to Gil-galad and Galadriel. In the published The Lord of the Rings, Gil-galad received only Vilya, while Círdan was the direct recipient of Narya from Celebrimbor.

While there is no official answer for why Bilbo and Sam were able to be rid of the Ring without too much issue, there is a lot of supporting evidence that suggests it was partially due to their inner morality, as well as partially because of the Ring choosing its own path.
What Makes the One Ring Different. While the previous 19 rings were crafted with the help of the Elves, the final ring, the 'One Ring to rule them all,' was crafted by Sauron alone; with the ability to dominate the other rings, the One Ring was made with some of Sauron's own power, in order to make it more powerful.
In the spiritual world, beings are invisible to those in the physical world. This is why Isildur, Bilbo, and Frodo become invisible when they wear the Ring—because they are no longer in the physical world. As Olsen said, Sauron does not have a real body, so he is not affected in the same way.
Sauron then created The One Ring around 1600, alone, in the heart of Mount Doom. Its purpose was to rule over all the other rings, and Sauron put a great part of his power into it. The Elves, upon the creation of the One Ring, heard Sauron speak the spell, and realized they had been betrayed.

Knowing that Sauron is on the loose, he could warn the dwarves of the growing evil and encourage them to forge their own rings.
The three rings were Vilya, Nenya, and Narya. The rings Vilya and Narya went to Elven High King Gil-galad of Lindon, who entrusted Vilya to Elrond and Narya to Círdan, Elven lords of Rivendell and Mithlond, respectively. These rings were kept by Elrond and Círdan following the death of Gil-galad.
The true owner of the One Ring is Sauron. He forged the Ring and wanted to use it to control the other ring bearers, earning him the title of the Lord of the Rings.
