Jesus is the ultimate firstborn (a title applied to him by Paul). The gospel authors never refer directly to Jesus as God's firstborn, but they do refer to him as the Son of God, a title that connects to the theme of the firstborn. ).
Israel as God's firstborn
In Exodus, Moses is instructed to say to Pharaoh "Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, my firstborn." The death of Pharaoh and the Egyptians' firstborn sons at the first Passover is direct recompense for God's identification of Israel as his own firstborn.
The modern World English Bible translates the passage as: Now the centurion, and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God."
