After a deadly fight on a mountain, Kenai killed the bear. The Great Spirits were disturbed by Kenai's senseless act of murder, and so Sitka transformed Kenai into a bear to give him a different perspective on his actions.
On the other hand, BROTHER BEAR has a moral point, which is not to seek revenge, but to try to see things through another's eyes. Kenai is a young Indian boy with two older brothers. He is hotheaded and always fighting with his middle brother. When a bear steals their catch of fish, Kenai goes after the bear.
The spirit of Sitka materializes before Kenai and draws his attention to the bear's body, which is promptly drawn up into the heavens to join the Great Spirits. Afterward, Sitka – this time in the form of an eagle – lifts Kenai into the air and transforms him into a bear.
For most of the film, Kenai doesn't know that the bear he killed was Koda's mother, and vice versa. Once Kenai realizes that he killed Koda's mother, he tells the cub. Then, Kenai raises Koda as his own, as his younger brother (hence the title).
Most of the characters are named after actual places in Alaska, where the story is set. Sitka is named after a big city in said state. Sitka's spirit, in the form of an eagle, can be seen throughout the movie after Kenai is changed into a bear.
After Sitka's fall, Denahi and Kenai comb the water for him. Although the two of them find his hood only. That night, the tribe mourns for Sitka, holding a funeral for him in which his totem is burned in a ceremonial pyre.
Koda forgives Kenai and comes back to help save him from Denahi. How can we forgive others even when it's hard? Sometimes it takes people changing in order for relationships to become better, such as the case between Kenai and Denahi.
