Arthur died at the hands of Mordred by the shores of Avalon, but, as the Once and Future King, he is destined to one day rise again.
Le Morte d'Arthur features the now-iconic scene where the two meet on foot as Arthur charges Mordred and runs a spear through him. With the last of his strength, Mordred impales himself even further to be within striking distance, and lands a mortal blow with his sword to King Arthur's head.
However, Mordred's faith in Arthur and Camelot was shattered after the imprisonment and death of his beloved Kara. Believing that Arthur had betrayed him and metaphorically spat on their friendship, Mordred turned against the king and joined Morgana once more.
Mordred and Arthur's armies clashed in battle at Camlann, where Arthur killed Mordred—but not before being mortally wounded by him. According to legend, Arthur did not die but was taken from the battlefield to recover on the island of Avalon, where he still remains.
What happened to Merlin following King Arthur's death? Merlin was betrayed. He was smitten with love for his protege, the beautiful enchantress Nimue (Vivian). She manipulated the old wizard into teaching her his most powerful magical spells.
Following the death of Arthur, Guinevere entered a convent, where she spent the rest of her life praying and helping the poor. Filled with remorse for the trouble she and her lover had caused, she vowed never to see Lancelot again. When Guinevere died, she was buried beside King Arthur.
However, after Arthur's death, Guinevere retires to a convent in penitence for her infidelity.
When Launcelot hears of the death of Arthur and Gawain, he comes to England in haste. He looks for the queen and finds her in a nunnery. For love of Guinevere as much as for remorse he takes on the habit of a priest. Guided by visions, he goes to Almesbury, where he finds Guinevere dead.
Mordred as a young boy keeps calling Merlin "Emrys", which is actually Merlin's name as a Celtic druid and sorcerer. In Welsh, Merlin's full real name is actually Myrddin Wynn Emrys. Myrddin is his first name, Wynn is his family name and Emrys is his druid name.
Lancelot dies of illness four years later, accompanied only by Hector, Bleoberis, and the former archbishop of Canterbury.
Morgana catches up with Merlin and Arthur and drives their horses away, but she is killed by Merlin wielding Excalibur. Without horses, Merlin cannot get Arthur to the Isle in time, and the King of Camelot dies in Merlin's arms, after thanking his friend for everything he has done.
The plan fails, however, when Mordred kills the soldiers with a couple of spears. Mordred then sees that Merlin was the one who tripped him and telepathically states to the warlock: "I shall never forgive you Emrys, and I shall never forget." He then escapes into the woods and isn't heard from again.
The child most frequently associated with King Arthur is his wicked son–nephew, Mordred, by his half sister, Morgause. Usually, the affair is arranged by his half sister Morgan le Fay without Arthur's knowledge.
MORTE D'ARTHUR: Morgause is Mordred's mother and Arthur the father. Morgana is Ywain's mother. SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT: Morgana is a character but no mention of any children of her.
It is unknown whether Merlin failed or fulfilled his destiny. Though Arthur's death would appear to have averted it, the Great Dragon told Merlin that all he had dreamt of building had come to pass and that when Albion's need was greatest, Arthur would rise again.
The French Vulgate texts establish the idea that Viviane is Merlin's student as well as the woman that he is in love with. We also learn that Merlin is the son of the devil. Viviane and Merlin are in love, and Viviane wishes to preserve the state of happiness that they are in.
Morgana is terrified of the aging warlock as she knows him to be her doom.
So, he decided to disguise himself as an old sorcerer, the same one he saw at the Crystal Cave, to lift the sentence off Gwen. Merlin had requested Gaius to make an ageing potion, and upon taking it, he transformed into an older version of himself.
Upon Arthur's death, that mantle fell to Henry VII and Elizabeth's only remaining son, the future King Henry VIII. King Henry VIII became heir to the throne after Arthur Prince of Wales's death and would go on to be one of England's most influential rulers.
In the medieval legends about King Arthur of Britain and his knights, Lancelot is the greatest knight of all. In time, however, Lancelot's love for Guinevere, the king's wife, leads him to betray his king and sets in motion the fatal events that end Arthur's rule.
In Geoffrey, Arthur passes his crown to his relative Constantine after being mortally wounded by the traitor Mordred in the Battle of Camlann. Geoffrey identifies Gildas' "royal youths" as Mordred's two sons, who, along with their Saxon allies, continue their father's insurrection after his death.
Merlin returns to Camelot to help raise Arthur's baby (and the other children too ofc). Merlin stays there for like a century as the Pendragons' advisor, until the line dies out, and then he does the wandering thing.
Here, Merlin survives the reign of Arthur, about the fall of whom he is told by Taliesin. Merlin spends a part of his life as a madman in the woods and marries a woman named Guendoloena (a character inspired by the male Gwenddoleu ap Ceidio).
She was devoted to Lancelot (her lover) and her betrayal of her husband created the end of King Arthur's roundtable and the downfall of Camelot. Thomas Malory described Guinevere as 'a true lover' and believed she had a 'good end.
