The Bible recores (II Samuel 22:15) that in another war, with the Philistines, he weary and faint in the battle. One of the giant's sons thought to have slain David, but Abichai, the son of Zeruiah helped David and smote the Philistine and killed him.
Armed with only a sling, he picked a stone from a riverbed and slung it at Goliath's head. David's aim was true; the stone struck the giant and killed him, prompting the Philistines to flee. The Israelites were jubilant. Saul was compelled to place young David at the head of his army (I Samuel 18:5).
So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
3. (48-49) David kills Goliath. So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
He quickly threw a stone with his sling. The stone hit Goliath in the forehead, and the giant man fell to the ground. The Lord helped David defeat Goliath without a sword or armor. When the Philistines saw that Goliath was dead, they ran away in fear.
He may have stood about 5-ft.-5-in. (166 cm) tall, the average man's height at the time.
The last sentence of our text tells us that four giants fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. David, of course, built his early career on the slaying of a famous giant.
Still, 6-foot 9-inches was extremely tall 3,000 years ago. David was a youth, so he may have been shorter than 5' tall, at an enormous disadvantage in any match of physical strength. Goliath was a Philistine champion, fighting to dominate the territory.

When David fought Goliath, he found the giant's weakness; his eyesight. Using his speed and maneuverability, he was able to avoid the giant's sword and break the rules with the only weapon that would not be within the giant's reach.
