Cardiovascular disease. Diabetes. Hypothyroidism and 'Graves Disease' (thyroid problems) Dry eyes or problems with tear ducts.
Eyelid surgery is not recommended for people with hypothyroidism, Grave's disease, dry eye syndrome, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma or retinal detachment. Your surgeon will evaluate any excess skin or fat around your eyelid area, the position of your eyebrows and the muscles around your eyelids.
temporary or permanent areas of numbness. temporarily blurred or impaired vision. dry or watery eyes. difficulty closing your eyes – for example, the upper eyelid may remain open while you are asleep, which can dry out the eye surface and cause scarring.
People who get eyelid surgery are usually in their mid-30s at least. This is because the aging process visibly affects the eyelids in most people by this time. However, if you are at least 18 years old and concerned about the appearance of your eyelids, this procedure may be right for you.
Your eyes may appear bigger, brighter, or more awake after your upper, lower, or double blepharoplasty. Many people find that blepharoplasty works well to erase visible signs of aging and increase youthful radiance. Discuss your anti-aging goals with Dr.
Results vary, but you should see tighter, brighter, more open eyes in the mirror. The results are often subtle but striking. You'll look natural but more rested and alert and younger. You will probably see a difference in your eyelids after surgery.
There may be intermittent bouts of blurriness, double vision, and sensitivity to light for two to four weeks following eyelid surgery.
The most common complications for which patients see me are: inability to completely close the eyes (lagophthalmos), caused by aggressive skin excision. poor or inadequate blink, caused by aggressive excision of the orbicularis oculi muscle that is responsible for eyelid blink.
You may need droopy eyelid surgery if: The skin on your upper or lower eyelids sags. You have trouble seeing due to your eyelids hanging too low. You find it difficult to keep your eyes open due to heavy eyelids.
Blepharoplasty won't stop your eyes from aging. But the results usually last a long time. Upper eyelid surgery can last anywhere from five to seven years to an entire lifetime, while lower eyelid surgery rarely needs to be done more than once.
Most surgeons will try to put it in the natural crease of the eye to hide it. Eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat, wrinkles and puffiness, but it isn't a miracle. Some skin around the eyes could remain an issue even after surgery and require additional help through lasers, injections, or peels.
Risks include:
Noticeable scarring. Injury to eye muscles. Skin discoloration. The need for a follow-up surgery.
After the eyelid has been lifted, this may cause your eye not to close all the way while blinking, or even remain open while sleeping. This can lead to reflex oversecretion of tears. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and may resolve completely after several months.
Does blepharoplasty make eyes smaller? Upper eyelid blepharoplasty tends to make the eyes look bigger and not smaller. This is because the overhang of skin from the droopy eyelids the makes the eyelids look smaller is reduced or removed entirely.
Look Younger with a Blepharoplasty
In some cases, it can even make you look older than you are. By improving the appearance of droopy or sagging skin, your eyes will look younger. In addition to this, your entire face will look more youthful.
Swelling is to be expected after your surgery. It might be very dramatic, particularly at first, and your eyes might look worse before they look better.
The results of a blepharoplasty can be dramatic – in some cases, a slight change in eye shape is observed. When the eyelid has been weighed down with excess or wrinkled skin, the eyes can appear more closed or squinted, often causing you to look tired, angry, or upset.
Your eyelid may be swollen and bruised for 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. The appearance of your eye may continue to get better for 1 to 3 months.
Injectable Treatments

The upper eyelid procedure is consistently safe and reproducible whereas the lower blepharoplasty poses more risks and is a more intricate procedure. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, lower lid blepharoplasty is safe and produces excellent results.
1-3 Days After Surgery
Your eyes will be the most swollen and sensitive for the first 3 days after your blepharoplasty procedure. During this time, light movement is recommended. Do: Sit up, stand, and walk around the house. Avoid: Strenuous activity, lifting or bending over.
This is temporary and usually goes away within 24 hours. Don't wear contact lenses until at least 2 weeks after your surgery. You can wear eyeglasses. Do not drive until you have stopped taking pain medication and no longer have blurry vision.
