Research in Britain shows that on average, females have a significantly larger vocabulary, they acquire skills and words more quickly and they also are ahead of males in their gesturing skills. Overall, girls also begin speaking an average of 1 month sooner than boys.
Statistics Warn Us That Boys are Usually Slower to Talk.
For instance, girls at 16 months of age will produce up to 100 words, while boys struggle at around 30 words.
This study suggests that high prenatal testosterone levels are a risk factor for language delay in male children. In contrast to the increased risk for delay in males, higher levels of testosterone appeared to reduce the risk of language delay among females.
The effects of speaker gender
As a general tendency, men tended to speak slightly faster than women both in reading (3.48 syll/s (s.d.=0.43) vs. 3.33 syll/s (s.d.=0.40)) and in spontaneous talks (5.2 syll/s (s.d.=0.57) vs. 5.03 syll/s (s.d.=0.61)).
The Language Gene
Scientists are studying a gene called FOXP2 which they have discovered to be an essential part of speech and language development. There have been many studies, on both animals and humans, that have confirmed that the “Language Gene” FOXP2 is found in higher levels in females.
Sex Differences in Memory
Females tend to perform better than males in verbal-based episodic memory tasks, as opposed to spatial-based memory tasks [10]. Females generally access their memories faster than males [11], date them more precisely [12], and use more emotional terms when describing memories [13].
Anecdotally, many parents say boys reach gross-motor milestones like sitting up, cruising and walking earlier than girls, but some pediatricians swear the opposite. Yet both are wrong: Studies show no significant differences between boys and girls when it comes to these motor skills in infancy.
Boys run faster than girls in all running phases, and the span between genders increases after the age of 15 years. It is useful that coaches take these findings into consideration when evaluating children in sprint performance.
Women are generally assumed to be more talkative than men. Data were analyzed from 396 participants who wore a voice recorder that sampled ambient sounds for several days. Participants' daily word use was extrapolated from the number of recorded words. Women and men both spoke about 16,000 words per day.
Most babies say their first word sometime between 12 and 18 months of age. However, you'll start to hear the early stages of verbal communication shortly after birth. "From birth to 3 months, babies make sounds. There's smiling and cooing," explains Loeffler.
A new study in France found that guys who talk FAST tend to do better with women. Researchers had men and women play a dating game, where they tried to seduce a potential love interest. And guys who talked fast did better than guys who spoke slowly.
The first reason is simple: Men often aren't encouraged to talk about their feelings. In fact, they're sometimes discouraged from doing so. Additionally, men often tend to shy away from vulnerable conversations.
Women around the world report higher levels of life satisfaction than men, but at the same time report more daily stress. And while this finding holds across countries on average, it does not hold in countries where gender rights are compromised, as in much of the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.
Most researchers agree that women are more emotionally expressive, but not that they experience more emotions than men do. Some studies have shown that women are more likely to produce inauthentic smiles than men do, while others have shown the opposite.
An observational study conducted by the University of Cambridge looked at 250 seminars held in 35 institutions over 10 countries. The ratio of men and women was almost equal in the all the seminars. Women were found to be two and a half times less likely to ask a question as compared to men.
Because men are taller than women for a direct physiological reason — the bone growth effects of estrogen —anything affecting the degree or timing of estrogen levels will inevitably influence human sexual size dimorphism, even if that was not an effect that nature was selecting.
Thus, the average adult male is about 70 inches tall, and the average adult female is about 64 inches tall.
Girls usually stop growing and reach adult height by 14 or 15 years old, or a couple years after menstruation begins. Learn more about growth in girls, what to expect when it happens, and when you may want to call your child's pediatrician.
Moms who give birth to girls tend to have slightly longer pregnancies. Boys are more likely to be born before their due date. After the 40-week mark, however, the odds slightly favor a girl.
“Male babies on average have greater difficulty self-regulating their emotional state and therefore have a greater reliance on emotional support, especially from their mother1,” he says. Research indicates that the slower development of baby boys' brains is likely due to the male hormone testosterone2.
It is true that boys produce their first words and phrases later than girls. However, these differences are only in terms of a matter of a few months. There is a normal range within the which children acquire certain speech and language milestones.
From elementary school through college, girls are more disciplined about their schoolwork than boys; they study harder and get better grades. Girls consistently outperform boys academically. And yet, men nonetheless hold a staggering 95 percent of the top positions in the largest public companies.
Gender is not what matters, say researchers.
Girls do better than boys in almost all subjects at school. Many researchers are concerned about the growing differences in girls' and boys' grades.
It's no surprise then, that men outperform women in the EQ skills of assertiveness and confidence, and women outperform men in the EQ skills of empathy and interpersonal relationships.
We find that women make more patient choices than men. The main finding is that women's patience is systematically related to the number of children.
