Count Dooku was a menacing Sith Lord and central figure in the Clone Wars. Once a Jedi -- trained by Yoda -- he became disillusioned with the Jedi Order and thirsted for greater power.
Dooku was taken by the Jedi Order as a child and apprenticed to Thame Cerulian. As a Jedi Knight, he took Qui-Gon Jinn as his Padawan and later trained Komari Vosa.

Bottom line, Dooku never considered himself a Sith. And he wasn't; he was a man looking to change the galaxy in a way the Jedi were unwilling to try. And that is why he joined the Sith and became Darth Sidious' apprentice, Darth Tyrannus. When Dooku became Sidious's apprentice, he was already an elderly man.

Sifo-Dyas doesn't receive his share of the blame
For a minor character, Sifo-Dyas carries a huge burden for the disaster that was the Clone Wars. It's true that his motives were good – he just wanted to create an army to protect the Republic – but at no point did he try to stop the war: he just hoped to control it.
Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas had once contacted cloners about ordering the Clone Army because he saw a prophecy of what he thought was an upcoming threat the Republic needed to defend against. He didn't live to actually place this order, but Darth Sidious and Count Dooku secretly made sure it moved ahead.

In 19 BBY, the lightsaber was lost when it was dropped out of the window of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's office prior to his death. In 18 BBY, Duros salvagers recovered it and gave it to Senator Sano Sauro.
Eventually, Qui-Gon completed his training, became a Jedi Master, and took on a Padawan of his own: the steadfast Obi-Wan Kenobi.
