Dumbledore takes Harry in as his favorite student, protects him, and shows faith in him and his abilities. He then sends Harry out to kill a dangerous wizard with very little preparation, all the while planning and expecting for Harry to meet his death.
During his education at Hogwarts, Dumbledore was known as the most brilliant student to have ever stepped into the school, winning "every prize of note that the school offered", and in his N.E.W.T.s, "... did things with a wand [the examiner had] never seen before".

After Dumbledore's death, Elphias wrote a heartfelt obituary for the Daily Prophet, about Albus Dumbledore. At Bill and Fleur's wedding, Elphias stated to Harry Potter that he certainly knew Albus the longest.
