During the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, India offered intelligence and other forms of support for the Coalition forces. After the overthrow of the Taliban, India established diplomatic relations with the newly established democratic government, provided aid, and participated in the reconstruction efforts.
Through investments in Afghanistan, India also has some support among segments of the Afghan population, which could be of advantage to the Taliban as well. India also greatly benefits from Afghanistan's strategic location, which grants access to land routes with Central Asia.
