As Americans have grown physically larger, brands have shifted their metrics to make shoppers feel skinnier—so much so that a women's size 12 in 1958 is now a size 6. Those numbers are even more confusing given that a pair of size-6 jeans can vary in the waistband by as much as 6 in., according to one estimate.
And, as much as it hurts to admit it, they're right. The Boston Globe recently featured an article on this very topic and found that as Americans have increased in size (along with our crazy obsession with being thin) clothing sizes have decreased. So what was once a size 14 now is a size 8, a size 8 is a size, etc.
In the last decade, while the UK population has only gotten bigger, an average size 8 has shrunk by two inches, writes Georgia Aspinall.
Because the average size of people in US and UK are different. Clothing sizes are usually standardized and set by the government and brands are expected to follow those. Also unlike USA, UK uses the metric system.
Actually sizes, unlike prices, are being deflated: Ten years ago, a size 8 could easily qualify as a size 2 today; a size 4 in the 1990s might be a zero.
When it came to size, the men were asked which dress size they preferred in women, here the results were unanimous. The majority of the men (nearly 86% of them) preferred a woman with a dress size 14 to 16.
It Hasn't Fit in a Year
People's sizes change. And sometimes the size of the clothing itself changes as it stretches with wear and tear. However, even if something fit you perfectly at one point, it might not fit forever. So if you've hung on to ill-fitting clothing for more than a year, it's time to get rid of it.
Contrary to common understanding, EU sizes do not translate directly to UK sizes. Typically they jump around 5/6 of a UK size, for every EU size on the scale.
European clothing tends to fit approximately 1 to 2 sizes smaller than their corresponding American size. When looking for clothing and shoes, try on both your corresponding size and the next size up.
French size 40 is usually an American medium or American size 10.
The biggest difference between the two size categories is that European are usually slightly bigger than their counterparts in the UK.
Today, the average American woman is 5'4″, has a waist size of 34-35 inches and weighs between 140-150 lbs, with a dress size of 12-14. Fifty years ago, the average woman was 5'3-4″ with a waist size of approximately 24-25″, she weighed about 120 lbs and wore a size 8.
What is a zero size figure? A size zero figure typically refers to the body size of a woman. A bust size of 31 inches, waist size of 23 inches and hip size of 32 inches is generally considered as a size zero figure.
That said, sometimes an extremely tight fit (think a figure-hugging bandage dress) can actually make you look bigger. Unless the garment will stretch with wear, look for pieces that fit just a fraction larger than your frame, says Matthew Burton.
When you just don't know what size to order or if you think you're in between sizes, it's always a safe bet to go a size up. It's much easier to work with a garment that's slightly bigger than one that's too small, if you don't want to return it.
In general, to get the French counterpart of your US size, simply add 32 to your existing American size. A US size 8 in clothing, for example, is a French size 40. For UK sizes, add 28 to your existing size to get the French size equivalent.
If you're a US size 2, you're a French size 34.
