Because of the prophecy, Daenerys believes she is barren. That's why she sees her dragons as her children and why Viserion's death affects her so deeply. As far as she knows, she will never give birth again, and her only family is a trio of dragons who came out of the fire with her.
But in the first of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” books on which the show is based, there's another line to Mirri's curse: “When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child.” Essentially, the reason Daenerys thinks she can't have children is that Mirri cursed her, killed her baby and wrecked her husband.
She may be the Mother of Dragons, but Daenerys apparently can't have human children. After almost a two-year wait, hit HBO series Game of Thrones is back on our screens - but, sadly, for the last time ever.
Now, George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter — the sixth book in the series A Song of Ice and Fire — might (and should) answer the question of whether Daenerys can have children. In Season 1, Daenerys married Khal Drogo and became pregnant with their son, Rhaego.
Can Dany have children? The books are clear that she cannot, but the show less so. In “Baelor,” the penultimate episode of Season 1, the Lhazareen witch Mirri Maz Duur, at the behest of Daenerys, performed a blood rite on her husband Khal Drogo.
Now, according to Game of Thrones Wiki fan page, Jon was born in 281 AL (AL = Aegon's Landing) and Dany was born in 282 AL, so there's actually just one year in age between the pair.
Will a Jon-Dany offspring ever sit on the Iron Throne? Before launching into the implications of a Targaryen baby for Westeros and the future of the throne, let's get one question out of the way: Is it even possible for Daenerys to have children? According to the mother of dragons, the answer is no.
Fans came out in their droves and spotted there had been clues in interviews from Dan Weiss and David Benioff, which seemed to confirm she was supposed to be pregnant. XoAXoS pitched in: “Even D&D kind of confirmed that she would get pregnant during the live commentary of the scene after the parlay.
In George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, Daenerys' son Rhaego is stillborn after she enters the tent in which Mirri Maz Duur is performing a blood magic ritual on Khal Drogo. The witch then implies to Dany that she is infertile after she discovers that Drogo has been left in a catatonic state.
In A Clash of Kings, book two of A Song of Ice and Fire, Daenerys Targaryen goes into the House of the Undying and hears and sees all sorts of prophecies and visions of the past and of the future. One of the prophecies relates to three betrayals in Dany's story: Once for love, once for blood, and once for gold.
The Targaryens have white or silvery blonde hair because the family is originally from Old Valyria, where lighter hair colours and skin were extremely common. Thanks to generations of inbreeding, the Targaryens have managed to preserve their distinctive Valyrian features.
To Daenerys Targaryen, the three eggs she later hatches are warm to the touch, although other people do not feel the heat. Dragons have been known to lay eggs in a clutch of up to at least five, and a dragon may lay several clutches during its lifetime.
Daenerys seemed more angry that Jon might be the true heir to the Iron Throne than worried about the fact that she had slept with her own nephew. But incest is nothing new to a Targaryen. Actor Emilia Clarke confirmed that Daenerys was not particularly perturbed by the fact that she was related to Jon.
“TARGARYENS ARE NOT IMMUNE TO FIRE!” the author emphatically stated. “The birth of Dany's dragons was unique, magical, wonderous, a miracle. She is called The Unburnt because she walked into the flames and lived. But her brother sure as hell wasn't immune to that molten gold.”
Daenerys: “And it will be. It's not easy to see something that's never been before: a good world.”
Rhaego is son of Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo. He was named after his late uncle, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen.
However, Jon Snow, the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, has swapped Gilly's son with Dalla's. This is done to spare the innocent child from Melisandre's flames on account of his king's blood, leaving Gilly's son at the Wall.
Which brings us to the elephant in the room: Jon and Dany consummated their budding romantic relationship in the season 7 finale. After Bran and Sam's reveal, Jon finally knows that he and Daenerys are aunt and nephew.
Despite being saved by Daenerys from being raped by the tribe's warriors, however, the priestess betrays her and the magic ritual results in Daenerys's unborn child being stillborn and leaves Drogo in a catatonic state. Because Drogo will never recover, Daenerys smothers him with a pillow.
The pair's mother is the late Rhaella Targaryen, sister and wife to Aerys, who died giving birth to Daenerys. This means Dany is Jon's aunt, and Viserys is his uncle.
Now, there are two theories here: One is that Drogon, a smart dragon, recognized what the Iron Throne symbolized and burned it, rebuking the desire for power that ultimately killed his mother. The other is that Drogon mistakenly thought that the pointy sword chair stabbed and killed Daenerys.
It gives us a decent idea of what Drogon did with Dany's body after he melted the Iron Throne and flew away from King's Landing. As theorised by Samwell Tarly in the finale, the dragon flew her to Volantis, where she'd grown up in exile after the death of her father, and cremated her body in line with family tradition.
1. Khal Drogo, Khal of the Great Grass Sea. As far as significant others go, Khal Drogo is probably the most significant.
Rose Leslie and Kit Harington are a match made on set. The pair, who first met while playing star-crossed lovers on Game of Thrones, has come a long way from Ygritte's first icy “You know nothing, Jon Snow.” They've now been married in real life for nearly four years and welcomed their first child in 2021.
