As the heroes watch, there is a moment when a bee lands on Zoya and then flies away. While this moment may seem like a random addition, the "Shadow and Bone" showrunners told Entertainment Weekly that this is a nod to the Grisha saint Sankta Lizabeta of Roses, who can control swarms of bees.
He was placed on a funeral pyre and burned. But afterward, we see a bee flying to Zoya (Sujaya Dasgupta), and while it's a small and (seemingly) insignificant moment, the bee is an actual Easter egg and might hint at what happens to The Darkling in the future.
As Alina and her companions burn the Darkling's body, we see a bee land on Squaller Zoya Nazyalensky (Sujaya Dasgupta). Zoya quickly swats the bee away, but it is a strange moment. The Shadow Fold has been devoid of life (save the murderous volcra) for hundreds of years.
Fans of Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse will likely recognize the bee as the symbol of one of the Ravkan saints: Sankta Lizabeta (or Elizaveta), patron saint of gardeners. According to legend, Elizaveta saved her village from raiders by praying in a field of roses. Bees surged from the flowers and defeated the attackers.
So, she joins forces with the Crows to help stop the Darkling, even sending a Heartrender into the darkness in order to save Inej. However, as punishment for her betrayal, the Darkling consumes the back end of the skiff with darkness, leaving them vulnerable to the volcra, who attack Zoya and Inej.
Even after she learns the truth about the Darkling, his powers are such that he can elicit a response from her when he kisses her without her consent. Alina and Mal share several passionate kisses. The King has a habit of taking advantage of beautiful servants. Genya slept with him.
Mal was oblivious to Alina's love from before book one even began. He slept with Zoya and countless others before he realised who was waiting by his back door. Was this the relationship we were rooting for?
There were too many plot points, too many characters, and too many details to keep track of. Even said superfans might find themselves a bit befuddled! The changes from the books were sometimes absolutely insane. The way the season ends with various couples remixed played out like unhinged fan fiction.
The occurrence left Kaz severely traumatized to the point of being touch-averse: he can't endure direct skin-to-skin contact with another person. Doing so even innocuously induced panic attacks and flashbacks to his helpless time on the raft. As such, he wears gloves constantly to protect himself from pain.
In the book, however, Alina uses merzost through her still-active connection to the Darkling in order to create her own nichevo'ya (shadow monsters like the Darkling uses) to fight back against him at the end of the second novel. As a result of her using the power that one time her hair turns permanently white.
Zoya, now the dragon's Grisha host, learns she can sense Grisha nearby and discovers her ability to transform into the dragon, using its power to defeat Fjerda during an invasion.
To Alina's surprise, Zoya is jealous of Alina for being the Darkling's favorite. Later, Alina wakes up to see the Apparat appear in the infirmary from the shadows. People on the borders are making altars to Alina.
Zoya is Julien's younger half-sister. Her birthday is October 22, 2006, which was revealed in her school records that were leaked to Gossip Girl. That makes her 16 years old, but Whitney Peak is 19.

Al Nahl, Chapter 16, 68-69, talks about a variety of topics, but Allah specifically chose the title The Bee to catch the attention of the readers. Bees are said to be Allah's miracles; the way they function and how they behave, are to be held as an example.
The Native Bee Symbol symbolizes honesty and willingness to serve the community above all. In Northwest Coast Cultures, Masked Bee Dancers are often intended to be amusing during dances. The dancer with the Bee Mask would dance around and touch other dancers and people with their sharp barbs or stingers.
Kaz also suffers from haphephobia, the fear of being touched or touching others. This developed from his traumatic experiences as a child, when he was thought to be dead and dumped with hundreds of dead plague victims. Kaz was forced to swim to shore, using his deceased brother as a float to keep him from drowning.
She and her brother were kidnapped by slavers, and she was forced to join a brothel named the Menagerie under the ruthless Tante Heleen. It is these experiences that have been traumatic for her, particularly what happened in the brothel.
'Shadow and Bone' makes room for Kaz's asexual identity, one that can exist within his desire for intimacy with Inej Ghafa.
Ivan is a gay character from Shadow and Bone.
1 The Darkling
The Darkling is the primary antagonist of the series, but he is considered the most powerful Grisha of all. As a Shadow Summoner, he can manipulate darkness to create solid objects and creatures.
Zoya was initially infatuated with the Darkling. Upon Alina's arrival at the Little Palace, Zoya instantly hates her for becoming the Darkling's new favorite, and expresses her jealousy by cheating during a duel and injuring Alina.
Nikolai asks Alina to return with him to Ravka and help him to defeat the Darkling. He also proposes marriage to her, suggesting that such an alliance would make both of them stronger and allow them to unite the First and Second Armies against the Darkling.
Rather than raping or assaulting women, the Darkling tricks Alina into falling in love with him, his goal being to take Alina's power for himself and effectively enslave her.
