The dragonlords themselves claimed to be literally descended from dragons, and these scaly little monsters may be the result of dragon genes, which are dormant in healthy Targaryens, being epigenetically switched on.
The prevailing theory is that Targaryen's really do have dragon blood flowing in their veins, and their children look like this while being carried to term. This would explain why only premature births seem to exhibit reptilian appendages.

As a result, more devastating and gruesome deaths are to follow, with one of the war's unfortunate victims being Queen Rhaenyra's son Joffrey Velaryon. Although Daemon takes the egg to Dragonstone, Rhaenyra flies in to confront him on the back of Syrax. Daemon reluctantly gives back the egg, which eventually hatches as Dreamfyre.
Because of the prophecy, Daenerys believes she is barren. That's why she sees her dragons as her children and why Viserion's death affects her so deeply. As far as she knows, she will never give birth again, and her only family is a trio of dragons who came out of the fire with her.
