Dumbledore explained that he decided to leave Harry with Vernon, Petunia, and
The Dursleys. The Dursley family are Harry Potter's last living relatives. To ensure Harry's safety, Albus Dumbledore placed him in the Dursleys' care when he was a baby.
She made a promise to Dumbledore
As Lily's last remaining blood relative, if Petunia were to take Harry in it would seal the enchantment and provide him with protection from Voldemort. This would last as long as he could call the place where his mother's blood existed his home.
Dumbledore makes the right decision when he leaves Harry with the Dursleys. He is protecting Harry's life, and that must be his first consideration. The manner in which he leaves Harry, however, is not Dumbledore's proudest moment.
'Remember my last'
Petunia's disdain for Harry was most likely born from a long-standing jealousy of her magical sister, Lily. A Howler from Dumbledore, addressed to Petunia, said 'Remember my last' – no doubt referring to the letter which he left with baby Harry, on the doorstep of Privet Drive.
Petunia never showed any love and affection at all towards Harry because he reminded her of Lily and the wizarding world. She treated him as a waste of space, giving him the cupboard under the stairs at first and making him do all the chores. She, along with Vernon, ignored most of Harry's birthdays.
From sisters to strangers
No doubt Petunia would have been saddened by the news of Lily's death but those complicated emotions – grief, regret and unresolved jealousy – were probably buried in the distractions of housework, gossip and pandering to her son Dudley's every whim.
Dear Petunia, It is with great sadness that I must inform you of the death of your sister and her husband. They were murdered by a Dark wizard known as Lord Voldemort, whose cruelty and violence they had been fighting for years. I tried my best to protect them, but, alas, I regret to say that I failed.
Petunia seemed to hold a sense of loyalty towards Harry, but she locked those feelings deep inside. Before the Second Wizarding War, Rowling shared that Dudley went on to marry and had two children. Harry was supposedly on amicable terms with the Dursley family, claiming they were on his Christmas card list.
She never really hated Lily. She was angry and jealous of her-Yes but never TRULY hated her. From the beginning she hated the fact Lily was special with magic and Petunia was not.
At some point before 2020, Petunia passed away for unknown reasons. It was revealed that she kept the blanket that Harry was brought to her in when he was a baby, which was given back to him after her death.
No. Because it had already been explained to the Dursley's why they had to leave Privot Drive and split off from Harry.
Tragically, the last time Petunia ever heard from Lily was an announcement of Harry's birth (which Petunia threw away). Rowling also explained that Vernon hated Harry for the same reason Severus Snape pretended to: He looked too much like his dad.
Dumbledore knew that destroying Voldemort's horcruxes was the only way to truly defeat him. He believed that Harry was the one person who was smart, courageous, and perhaps lucky enough to find and eliminate all the horcruxes.
One is that Severus Snape is a master of Occlumency and therefore a difficult target for Voldemort to see through. The second is that Harry himself was not able to block Voldemort, and therefore the overall plan between Snape and Dumbledore was too critical to risk its discovery.
He left Hermione a copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a collection of fairy tales familiar to virtually everyone raised by wizards. To Harry, Dumbledore bequeathed the first Snitch he ever caught, saved from his first Quidditch match.
Vernon's dislike of Harry, she adds, “stems in part, like Severus Snape's, from Harry's close resemblance to the father they both so disliked”.
Dudley's last line is also found in a deleted scene.
His last words in the movie are, "I still don't understand why we have to leave." But he also has a deleted film scene where he has a final conversation with Harry, and his last line is, "I don't think you're a waste of space."
One of the most beautiful moments in the entire Potter series came from when Dudley and Harry were able to make amends. This occurred in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when Dudley told Harry that he didn't think he was a waste of space. They even shook hands!
Petunia wanted to be a witch: Rowling reveals that, “Petunia had some latent feelings of guilt about the way she had cut Lily (whom she knew, in her secret heart, had always loved her) out of her life.” She also says that Petunia always held out hope that she would show signs of magic “and be spirited off to Hogwarts.”
There is no greater dishonor. Join me in the Forbidden Forest, and confront your fate. If you do not do this, I shall kill every last man, woman and child who tries to conceal you from me. Harry Potter, the Boy who Lived...
Who better to send Harry on his way from King's Cross station, with one last piece of wisdom: 'Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love. ' Pottermore looks back at the moments that made our favourite characters so memorable.
The fan asked the author if Aunt Petunia was a Squib (a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent) and Rowling replied: "Good question. No, she is not, she is not a Squib. She is a Muggle.
Apparently Petunia arranged the funeral for Lily and James, choosing for them to be buried in Godrics Hollow. Petunia was the only member left of Liliy's and James' family so it was left for her to do.
Today, both Tendler and Mulaney announced on their separate Instagram accounts that Petunia, who was in their 2014 wedding and would reportedly have turned 10 this June, has died. Tendler wrote the following: “Rest in peace my sweet Petunia.
