To Gatsby, Daisy represents the paragon of perfection—she has the aura of charm, wealth, sophistication, grace, and aristocracy that he longed for as a child in North Dakota and that first attracted him to her.
However, his love interest comes to symbolize both wealth and social status. It is his longing for Daisy, i.e., the need of ownership through a love that seemingly transcends class and wealth, which transforms him into the Jay Gatsby that the readers finally meet.
He is obsessed with her, he idolizes her. Daisy is an embodiment of his dreams more than she is a real woman. But indeed she is real and she can't choose between Jay and Tom, she loved Tom Buchanan at the beginning of their marriage and she confesses it to Gatsby.
Throughout the novel, he unsuccessfully tries to turn back time and relive his relationship with Daisy. Daisy represents Gatsby's dream because she symbolizes a life full of wealth, however he is never able to achieve it because five years have passed and for him the American dream is just an unobtainable illusion.
Despite Gatsby's “romantic readiness” (2), as narrator Nick Carraway puts it, he subtly shows that his love for Daisy is never genuine.
