On July 25, 1898, 16,000 U.S. troops invaded Puerto Rico at Guánica, asserting that they were liberating the inhabitants from Spanish colonial rule, which had recently granted the island's government limited autonomy.
The strategic value of Puerto Rico for the United States at the end of the nineteenth century centered in economic and military interests. The island's value to US policy makers was as an outlet for excess manufactured goods, as well as a key naval station in the Caribbean.
When the troops invaded and subdued the inner cities, the Treaty of Paris of 1898 was signed, and the American flag was raised over the island. Colonialism shaped Puerto Rican migration to the United States before and after the invasion.
In 1898, the United States invaded and colonized Puerto Rico as part of the Spanish American War. For 114 years the people of Puerto Rico have maintained a polarizing debate on the STATUS ISSUE that has been front and center of the political discourse on the Island.
Puerto Rico. On October 18, 1898, American troops fighting in the Spanish-American War raised the United States flag in Puerto Rico formalizing U.S. control of the former Spanish colony. General Nelson A. Miles had landed approximately 3,500 U.S. troops on the island on July 25.
In 1900, Hawaii became a territory, and Dole became its first governor. Puerto Rico is not a state because it has the political status of an unincorporated territory of the United States. As a result, Puerto Rico is neither a sovereign nation nor a state of the United States.
Spanish Colonialism
The explorer swiftly claimed the island for Spain and renamed it San Juan Bautista. For 400 years, Puerto Rico was under Spanish colonial rule. During this time, the island experienced extreme levels of poverty, repression and taxation.
The U.S. Congress passed the Foraker Act, establishing a civilian government in Puerto Rico under U.S. control. The Act provided for an elected House of Representatives on the island, but not for a vote in Washington.
The war officially ended four months later, when the U.S. and Spanish governments signed the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. Apart from guaranteeing the independence of Cuba, the treaty also forced Spain to cede Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States.
The Jayuya Uprising was a revolt in the town of Jayuya, Puerto Rico, which occurred on October 30, 1950. The revolt, led by Blanca Canales, was one of the most notable among the various revolts which occurred that day against the island's US-supported government.
After Cuba was taken, President William McKinley approved the land invasion of Puerto Rico by way of Fajardo, taking into consideration that the Spaniards had fortified San Juan, where they expected the initial attack.
Initially, Columbus christened the Island San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). The name was soon changed to Puerto Rico, or “rich port,” when the Spaniards realized the impressive amount of gold found in its rivers.
In 1901, the US Supreme Court ruled on the status of the island territories that came under US administration after the Spanish–American War of 1898. Puerto Rico became an “unincorporated territory”; such statuses was given to territories that were not considered potential states.
Both Puerto Rico and the USVI are unincorporated territories of the United States, and as such, U.S. citizens are free to travel there without a passport, just as they may travel freely between states and other territories without a passport.
The American rule of Puerto Rico hurt them Puerto Ricans because they were not an independent nation and those like Luis Munoz Rivera were determined to fight for it. However, we also helped them by providing protection for the people and the property and eventually allowing them to have a say in government.
