When the promotional poster for the season was first released, it was revealed that the character of Mateo was recast with Elias Janssen due to previous child actor Joseph Sanders being too busy with school to commit to the role.
But when season 4 rolled around, Mateo suddenly looked... different. And as Jane The Virgin was always prepared to go meta, our beloved narrator warns us of the fact with a glib comment: "In Novellas, you must be prepared for change, after all".
The little one joined in the middle of Season 3, when the show flashed forward to take Mateo from babbling baby to witty toddler. Over a near-dozen episodes, fans fell in love with Joseph, so imagine their shock when he was replaced by Elias Janssen in the promo posters for the new year — and in the first ep.

Mateo (Elias Janssen) is Rafael and Jane's son.
Mateo Villanueva came from a family of riches from Venezuelan oil. He and his brothers fought about the family wealth and Mateo gave it all up and decided to move to the US, as it was the wish of his wife, Alba Villanueva. Mateo worked very hard to provide for his family and, sadly, died at the young age of 43.
It is later revealed that it's because he has ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
During the series finale, Petra was emotional over Jane and Rafael's happy ending and feared that she'd never find love again. However, at the wedding, JR returns and reunites with Petra and the duo get back together. Petra went from a villain on Jane the Virgin to a beloved character and I loved every second of it.
Later that night, Owen finds Mateo drinking tequila on the patio. He confides in Owen that he believes Tatum has some kind of dementia and has known since Darby's funeral that something was wrong. He also confesses he didn't want to leave the 126, he chose to leave to help Tatum.
But in a recent interview with V.F., Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman confirmed that Mateo's role was written in the stars from the beginning: “He was always going to be the narrator,” she said.

There was a possibility that the Narrator would be a character who had died. However, as some theorized, the Narrator has been revealed to be Mateo Villanueva due to the fact that the narrator says he loves Xiomara very much.
They are as close and supportive IRL as they are on screen. There are few TV families as loving as Jane the Virgin's. Thankfully, the cast is every bit as tight-knit in real life— and they've got the IG receipts to prove it.
In season five Jane's son Mateo is diagnosed with ADHD and the writers used the most basic negative stereotypes. He's disruptive, even violent, hyperactive, his struggles are always completely public.
Later in the episode, Jane and Rafael receive the tests results confirming Mateo is indeed their biological son. The happy news, and an argument between Jane and Alba (Ivonne Coll), allow Jane to crack the missing piece from her novel.
Anna & Ellie Solano (portrayed by uncredited baby actors, seasons 2–3; Mia and Ella Allan, seasons 3–5) are Petra and Rafael's twin daughters. Unlike their half-brother, they grow up to be well behaved with good manners.
Michael winds up the go-to-guy for helping men be a part of the Villanueva family unit, helping out both Rafael and Rogelio. Jane and Rafael get Mateo back. Jane invites Rafael to live at the Villanueva house for a few weeks so he can be around Mateo.
