Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn't have wanted a funeral. She's too private, and anyway, people don't really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring.
Because no funeral that Endgame would have been able to show would have lived up to the one we can now imagine, knowing what we know after Natasha's standalone. Nat's funeral wouldn't have been a respectful private gathering, it would have been an international event.
Natasha doesn't. That's partly because Tony's this massive public figure and she's been a cipher the whole time. It wasn't necessarily honest to the character to give her a funeral."
Her tombstone is featured among many others in a remote cemetery and recognizes her as a daughter, sister, and Avenger. Even though Nat's body was left on Vormir after her sacrifice, this grave is her symbolic resting place.
We later learn that they're in the midwest, so we assume that Natasha's grave (which is symbolic, since her body was left on Vormir last we knew) is in Ohio, the state she lived in as a girl with her Russian “family.” It's unclear who established it there, though it might have been Yelena herself.
The post-credits scene shows Yelena (Florence Pugh) visiting the grave of Natasha/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who died in “Avengers: Endgame.” In that film, Black Widow sacrificed herself by falling off a cliff so that Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) could secure the Soul Stone in order to stop Thanos.
Turns out it's Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), the mysterious woman whom we first met in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
However, Red Skull told Hawkeye that Black Widow's death is permanent. Later, the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) says that he tried to wish Black Widow back into existence when he held the Infinity Stones, but that it wasn't possible because, as Red Skull confirmed, the magic of the Soul Stone requires a permanent sacrifice.
Marvel Studios's Director of Visual Development Andy Park confirmed the possibility via an Instagram post intended to promote the new "The Art of Black Widow" book. An upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film will serve as a sequel to the 2021's "Black Widow," according to Marvel Studios executive Andy Park.
The most obvious answer would be that Natasha's body remained on Vormir after her death.
We know that Gamora wasn't at Tony Stark's funeral - unsurprising considering that she didn't know him, really - so she must have fled after the battle was won.
Madame Natasha
The pair dated for a brief time until he realized she was actually a spy for the Russian government code-named the Black Widow. Since then, Stark and Natasha Romanoff have become close comrades as she gave up her former alliances and became an Avenger.
Though the character of Black Widow died in 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Johansson did reprise the role for the 2021 prequel Black Widow. The Avengers star confirmed she's finished with the MCU, but noted that it was “such a unique experience.”
Upon her resurrection in the Blip in 2023, Belova attempted to seek out Romanoff, but was informed that she had died. While visiting Romanoff's grave, Belova was given an assignment by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who claimed that Clint Barton was responsible for Romanoff's death and that she was to eliminate him.
If Natasha had survived her time on Vormir, and Clint had sacrificed himself instead, she would have been able to return home with the Soul Stone and participate in the final battle against Thanos.
Natasha is on her own because the Sokovia Accords effectively disbanded the Avengers. No one can come to her aid because most of her allies are on the run from the government.
Yelena Belova appears in media set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Florence Pugh. This version is a sister to Natasha Romanoff and was trained to be a Black Widow alongside her in the Red Room. Pugh first appears in the live-action film Black Widow (2021).
Hawkeye. On numerous occasions in the comics, Clint Barton has said he's just a regular guy with a bow and arrow. Unfortunately, his lack of power usually leads to him suffering injuries regularly and has led to fans deeming him the weakest member of the Avengers.
Black Widow's first romantic relationship was with a soldier named Nikolai, who she met while both were serving with the Russian Army during WWII. There was no backstory for the young soldier, but Natasha and Nikolai fell in love and were eventually married.
Scarlett Johansson has now decided to confirm that her time as Black Widow has come to an end, and there are no plans to revive her.
Like with other fallen MCU characters, it's highly unlikely Black Widow will be brought back in the Multiverse Saga (and not even as a variant), but it's not too late for Marvel to make up for its Black Widow mistakes since Avengers: Endgame, and it has a brand-new chance to honor her legacy and give her the farewell ...
Why did Gamora return but not Black Widow, even though they both died in the same way? The main reason is that Gamora died in Vormir before Thanos' snap, whereas Natasha died after Thanos' snap. What is this? Further, Black Widow cannot be awakened since she has passed away and not merely due to the snap.
“Maybe you'd like a shot at the man responsible for your sister's death.” She hands the tablet to Yelena, and the man in the photo is Clint Barton (AKA, Hawkeye, AKA Jeremy Renner).
'Black Widow' has one end-credits scene. Here's what it means for future Marvel shows and movies. Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Marvel's "Black Widow."
But here, Yelena and her dog, Fanny (a little nod to Natasha's alias from earlier in Black Widow, given to her by O-T Fagbenle's Mason), take a breath to mourn Natasha, a “daughter, sister, Avenger.” It's a tender moment, until the camera pans over to Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
