The Rooting Reflex The most probable reason your little babe is rubbing her face on you is because of an involuntary primitive motor reflex newborns have called a rooting reflex, which signals that your baby is hungry.
Self-soothing
Some babies find it soothing to shake their head from side to side. They may do this when they are overstimulated, anxious, or trying to fall asleep. Self-soothing is harmless and may help a baby feel less anxious in new situations.
They do it because it's rhythmic, and it comforts and soothes them. Children might: get on all fours and rock back and forth, hitting their foreheads on the headboard or edges of the cot. sit in bed and bang their heads backwards against the headboard.
“Babies love to burrow close to feel the warmth of their parent or caregiver and hear their heartbeat. This means that you are a safe place for them.” A newborn might also exhibit this behavior when they're hungry (the terminology is known as “rooting,” Kimbrough adds), as they look to latch on to a breast to feed.
By two months, most babies will look happy to see you, and they'll smile when you talk to them. For many parents, those smiles are a heartwarming first glimpse of true affection. By four months, your baby will be smiling unprompted, hoping to catch your attention with a little “I love you” from across the room.
The early signs that a secure attachment is forming are some of a parent's greatest rewards: By 4 weeks, your baby will respond to your smile, perhaps with a facial expression or a movement. By 3 months, they will smile back at you. By 4 to 6 months, they will turn to you and expect you to respond when upset.
By about 4 to 6 months of age, babies become more social. They love to cuddle and laugh. They become expressive and may "flirt" with their doctor or people across a room.
They Are Trying to Communicate
And there staring is their way to communicate. Babies can't quite interact yet for the first few months, so their staring is their way of communicating with you. A baby looking zoned out may be a way of communicating that they are sleepy.
Smiling sessions with your baby will become increasingly animated and joyful. When things get too emotionally intense for your baby, they will stop gazing at you, and they will look away for a few moments. This is called gaze aversion, and it shows that your baby's level of arousal is too high.
Your baby might stare and smile because they are happy to see a familiar face, such as a parent or caregiver, or because they are trying to engage or communicate with someone. Babies might also stare and smile because they are mirroring someone who is smiling at them.
And it's time to teach your child to self soothe, so that they don't rely on being rocked to sleep anymore. Babies are old enough to self soothe once they are around 15 weeks (adjusted). So if you have a baby who is over 15 weeks old, and you're ready to break the rocking to sleep habit, NOW is the perfect time.
Babies instinctively lifting and slamming their legs may indicate discomfort or pain. Many things could cause this pain. Common culprits are teething, constipation, or other physical issues.
Movement during sleep
Benign neonatal sleep myoclonus: sudden movements of their arms, legs, and face during sleep. It disappears on its own by 6 months. This is completely normal, and it just means that the infant's brain is active.
The milestone of responding to one's own name usually occurs between 4 and 9 months, according to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA). Not all babies reach this milestone at the same time, of course, but most should be appearing to recognize their name with consistency between the ages of 7 and 9 months.
What You Should Know About Ear Rubbing: Most infants have discovered their ears and are playing with them. Some have an itchy ear canal. Earwax buildup is the most common cause.
“From birth, infants pick up on emotional cues from others. Even very young infants look to caregivers to determine how to react to a given situation,” says Jennifer E. Infants (birth to 24 months of age) can express a wide range of basic emotions including: discomfort, pleasure, anger, fear, sadness and excitement. As we learned in Chapter 6, infants are developing attachments to primary caregivers and may show some anxiety when separated from the important adults in their lives.
Do Babies Feel Love? In short, yes: Babies do feel love. Even though it will be quite a while before they're able to verbalize their feelings, they can and do understand emotional attachment. Affection, for example can be felt.
Smiles: Babies who are well nourished and tenderly cared for will grin, smile, and light up for their special caregivers. Appetite: If he feels relaxed and comfortable and plays vigorously with crib or floor toys, your baby will nurse and eat with pleasure. Voice: Happy babies vocalize a lot. They squeal.

But now, they may toddle over on their own to give you a hug and kiss for no reason—or so it seems. As your little one starts exploring the world, they can sometimes feel torn. One part of them wants to be fiercely independent; the other part wants reassurance that you are still there.
