Heart failure symptoms can interfere with getting a good night's sleep. Lying flat in bed can make it harder to breathe and cause coughing. Propping up your head with a pillow may help, but the need to use two or more pillows may be a sign of worsening heart failure.
Here's why: People with heart failure tend to experience shortness of breath while they lie flat; this discomfort goes away when they sit up. Difficulty breathing can obviously hinder your ability to sleep, so stacking multiple pillows relieves the discomfort and helps with sleep.
Dr. Lisa: In order to keep the airway open, it is better to sleep with one pillow that is relatively flat. If you feel you breathe better when propped up on two or three pillows, you should discuss this with your doctor because you might be having lung or heart problems or gastroesophageat reflux.
Explore the options. Two-to-three is the standard for a reason and will likely be the dominant figure in American bedrooms for years to come. 4–5 pillows: Having this many pillows on your bed suggests an anxiety that in the future you may need more pillows than you have available.
Shortness of breath while lying down.
To gauge the severity of this symptom, doctors often ask people how many pillows they need to lie on to avoid feeling short of breath in bed. For example, "three-pillow" orthopnea is worse than "two-pillow" orthopnea, because you have less tolerance for lying flat.
According to sleep experts, you should sleep with only one pillow under your head, however, preference and sleeping position often take the lead when it comes to considerations for the ideal number of pillows. Read on to learn why we recommend sleeping with a high-quality single pillow.
Sleeping. Lie on your side with a pillow between your legs and your head elevated with pillows. Keep your back straight. Lie on your back with your head elevated and your knees bent, with a pillow under your knees.
Sleeping with your head elevated or on your side can take some pressure off your lungs and allow more oxygen to flow in, letting you sleep more soundly.
Experts typically recommend sleeping on the side as the best position for breathing problems like snoring and pauses in breathing caused by obstructive sleep apnea.

Warning signs and symptoms of heart failure include shortness of breath, chronic coughing or wheezing, swelling, fatigue, loss of appetite, and others. Heart failure means the heart has failed to pump the way it should in order to circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.
Stage 2 of Congestive Heart Failure
Stage two of congestive heart failure will produce symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, or heart palpitations after you participate in physical activity.
Use Pursed Lip Breathing when walking. Inhale through your nose and exhale through pursed lips. Exhale slowly and comfortably, not forcibly, breathing out twice as long as you breath in. This will keep your breathing slow and restore oxygen to your body more rapidly.
Hold your breath for 3 to 5 seconds. Then—as you let that breath out [coughing]— cough 2 or 3 times. Push on your belly with your arms as you cough. [coughing] Breathe in slowly and gently through your nose, and repeat the coughing if you need to.
Cons: Sleeping on the left side can put pressure on the stomach and lungs, and affect blood flow, so it is best to switch it up… or you may experience numbness in your arms from resting on one for too long.
Bending forward may help with breathing because it helps the diaphragm to move more easily. The diaphragm is a large sheet of muscle that separates your lungs from your belly. It helps draw air into your lungs as you breathe.
If you experience shortness of breath after dealing with a stressful event, it's probably due to anxiety. As you engage in relaxing activities, such as taking long deep breaths, yoga, or a gentle walk, and separating yourself from the stress, your breath should return to normal.
The use of a pillow between your knees can improve overall comfort in bed. In particular, these pillows can help relieve pressure on the knees themselves. They can also help keep the spine, hips, and pelvis in alignment, which is particularly useful for those who experience back pain.
The notch under the nose is called the philtrum. The notch above the sternum is called the suprasternal notch. These two areas should be level when lying on your side. If the philtrum is lying higher than the suprasternal notch then your pillow is too high.
Conversely, if the height of the pillow is too low, the neck muscles can also be strained. Based on the body's measurements and personal preference, the pillow should maintain a height of 4 to 6 inches, properly supporting the head and neck (and shoulders when lying on back).
