Dogs sit by the door because they missed you, they heard you coming in, or they want to be the first to greet you. Sometimes they will sit by the door because they are looking to mate, they have to go to the bathroom, or they are bored.
Protection. Since our fur babies know that the door carries the possibility of danger, they might be sleeping there ready to paw-tect you by blocking any threat. This behavior is particularly common among dog breeds that are naturally protective and have guard dog tendencies, like German Shepherds and Rottweilers.
Sometimes the reason why a dog stares at a wall is simply because they see or hear something. In other cases, this behavior may actually be a sign of confusion or cognitive dysfunction, a seizure disorder, or a habitual behavior that has developed over time.

A dog doesn't understand being away from their owner, and will generally express great joy at their return. Isolation during the day can also make some dogs anxious, to the point that they won't eat their food or treats left out until their owner returns. A dog might also just be nervous to be alone.
It provides them with a reliable place to lay their head and sense safety. This desire to sleep with you is likely a natural instinct to stay close for safety and secureness. You being the head of household or of certain authority to your dog, they feel the most secure in your presence.

Researchers think that canines can experience basic emotions, including joy, fear, love, sadness, and anger. Along the same lines, it is thought that dogs can sense these same emotions in their favorite humans.

The symptoms of depression in dogs are similar to those experienced by people. Some dogs may also show signs of aggression, including uncharacteristic howling or whining.

Anxiety and Stress
Dogs who have anxiety issues often develop clingy dog behaviors. Interestingly, dogs can also become clingy if they sense our stress or anxiety. Dogs can also become clingy if you change their daily routine or make changes in the home or household that cause them stress.
Dogs love their owners and would spend every minute of their day with them if it was up to them. When their owner leaves, it causes a lot of uncertainty, anxiety and sadness thus dogs vocalize it through cries in hopes their owner would return sooner.
