Compulsory savings. An amount equal to 20% of money earned by prisoners is withheld from the prisoner for compulsory savings and made available to the prisoner only on release from prison. This is to help the prisoner with costs related to their re-integration into the community.
You can get a Crisis Payment for Release from Prison or Psychiatric Confinement each time you're released. It's equal to a week's pay at the maximum basic rate of your income support payment or ABSTUDY Living Allowance. It doesn't include other allowances or supplements.
Centrelink payments are not available while in prison. Prisoners may be eligible for a Centrelink Crisis Payment on release.
To be sure, the majority of states send released prisoners home with cash, check or debit cards. Yet few states give a flat amount of gate money to every person released. Temporary release
