Last night, Vampire Diaries fans watched as Elena Gilbert was put into a magical coma when Kai linked her life to Bonnie's. So as long as Bonnie is alive, Elena can't be, which means that Elena went into a 60-plus year sleep in order to allow her best friend to attempt to find happiness.
Team #Bamon managed to defeat Kai, but because waking Elena would mean killing Bonnie, the gang decided to keep her at rest. In a series of heartbreaking — and I mean absolutely rip-your-heart-out-and-stomp-it-into-pieces — sequences, Elena's friends let her into their thoughts in an attempt to say goodbye…
At Alaric's wedding, Kai ruins their wedding and casts a sleeping spell on Elena, linking her life to Bonnie's. She makes a sacrifice to let Bonnie live out her life until it is her turn.
The sleeping spell she's locked in stops her aging. But that is just temporary immortality, which means that the only thing stopping her from aging 60-odd years will be the cure in her blood.
5 or 6 years. Kai puts Elena in the coma in I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime which takes place June 23, 2013. She does not wake up until just before May 2019, when Bonnie somehow finds a way of breaking the spell. This puts the time that Elena was in the coma at 6 years give or take, as mentioned above.

As the youngest writers on staff, Badillo and Levich related to Elena's point of view and felt that the character losing her virginity at 17 wasn't a big deal.
Elena simply did not rapidly age, because she was still within her human lifespan (she had not began to live outside her human lifespan yet), so she'd have been fine. If the Cure could be divided it would have been stated by now, and there wouldn't have been a big deal about it being singular.
Bonnie ended up finally taking control of her witch powers in the finale, saving Mystic Falls and breaking the curse keeping Elena asleep without having to die in the process.
After quitting the show, she mentioned that she did not want to play a teenager anymore. She wanted to play adult roles in good movies, work with great filmmakers and tell meaningful stories. Which is why she decided to be picky with her projects.
Casting. On January 26, 2017, it was announced that Nina Dobrev would return as Elena Gilbert in the series finale. At the end of the episode, "It's Been a Hell of a Ride" on February 24, 2017, it was revealed that Dobrev would reprise her role of Katherine Pierce as well.
It is revealed that Elena is a Petrova Doppelgänger (like Katherine and Nadia), which is thus responsible for her being identical to her ancestor, Katherine Pierce (née Katerina Petrova). This also has the implication of making her a supernatural creature.
Elena and Kai were first separated when Damon beheads Kai as a vampire-witch hybrid. Kai was later resurrected by Arcadius, but ended up trapped in the 2018 Prison World and Elena was awaken from the slumber when Bonnie break the linking spell, which permanently seperated them.
Elena was ALIVE! Damon had been hallucinating, and he actually didn't burn her body. She was still resting peacefully in her coffin in New York. Damon called Stefan and told him the good news.
It turns out, she would. But how? After all, she's been in a coma since the end of season 6 — and the only way she can wake up is if Bonnie Bennett, played by Kat Graham, dies. Well, it turns out that the show's penultimate episode did feature Bonnie dying, sort of.
It is later revealed that after having the cure drained from her, that her 500 years is starting to catch up to her, and only had a few months left to live. This wouldn't have happened if the cure wasn't drained from her blood. She would have aged normally had it had not been removed from her blood.
Damon spends the next two seasons devoted to Elena, waiting for her to wake up. He repeatedly states that he is miserable without her, and will spend the next 60 or so years unhappily until Bonnie dies. However, Damon is committed to staying true to Elena and doing right by her.
Elena Gilbert
Despite their uncertainties about their future, Elena took the Cure and regained her previously compelled away memories of Damon. However, Kai Parker meddled and kept Damon from taking the Cure; he wasn't able to take it and become human with Elena until the end of the series.

In "The Vampire Diaries," lead Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) was 17 at the start of the series, while vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) were 162 and 169 years old, respectively (as the show explains within the first season).
But by the time of her death in The Vampire Diaries's season 5, as a delayed side effect of taking the cure for vampirism, Katherine is over 500 years old. Elena's vampiric turn has some loose parallels to Katherine's turn. At age 18, Elena gets in a car crash that ends with her drowning.
