As your baby's head stretches the birth canal and the area of skin between your vagina and anus (your perineum): you may have a strong burning feeling which normally lasts a few minutes.
During labor, your uterus pushes the baby down and stretches the opening of your uterus (cervix). Each time the uterus muscles flex, you may feel pain like a strong cramp. As your cervix and vagina stretch and open, you may feel a stretching, burning pain.
The area between the vagina and anus (called the perineum) stretches during childbirth. As your baby's head is being delivered, there might be a burning feeling in your perineum.
While slightly more than half said having contractions was the most painful aspect of delivery, about one in five noted pushing or post-delivery was most painful. Moms 18 to 39 were more likely to say post-delivery pain was the most painful aspect than those 40 and older.
Healing tips for your vagina after birth:
Use a perineal irrigation bottle (like a squirt water bottle) until you feel better. Dousing yourself during and after urinating can ease any burning and keep the area clean to avoid infection. Then, pat gently with clean toilet paper or a baby wipe. Don't rub.
By waiting to give the newborn the first bath, studies show the newborn is better able to stabilize his or her blood sugar and temperature.
Painful urination after a vaginal birth
Some general soreness is normal as your perineum recovers from all that pushing, and you might notice it more when you're peeing. If you had any tearing or an episiotomy, it's normal to experience some sharp stinging as urine comes into contact with the healing tissue.
Most women will feel increased pressure in their perineum, rectum, and low back at this stage. For many women, the rectal pressure feels the same as having a bowel movement. As the baby's head begins to appear, you may feel a stretching or burning sensation.
Common options for coping with pain include massage, water therapy, and breathing exercises. Music and calming smells (aromatherapy) can help relax you. Consider taking short walks and changing positions during labor—moving around can reduce pain.
How long does it take to push baby out? In all, delivery generally takes 30 minutes to an hour, but it could take as long as three hours, especially in first babies (second and subsequent babies usually pop out a lot faster), or as short as a few minutes.
Three to four pushing efforts of 6 to 8 seconds in length per contraction are physiologically appropriate (AWHONN, 2000; Roberts, 2002; Simpson & James, 2005). When the time is right for pushing, the best approach based on current evidence is to encourage the woman to do whatever comes naturally.
Deliver in an upright, nonflat position.
There are a number of delivery positions that might reduce the risk of a vaginal tear during childbirth. Rather than lying down flat during delivery, deliver in an upright position. Your health care provider will help you find a comfortable and safe delivery position.

A person can expect vaginal changes after giving birth. Common changes include perineal pain, pain during sex, bleeding, and vaginal dryness. According to the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS), it is not unusual for people to notice new and uncomfortable vaginal changes after giving birth.
Their study found two special proteins (SRC-1 and SRC-2) are released from the baby's lungs into the amniotic fluid just before the beginning of labor. This causes an inflammatory response in the uterus that sends labor signals to the mother's brain.
While there's no scientific evidence to support the idea that silent birth preserves the baby's psyche, it's long been known that women labor most effectively in calm, supportive environments. And contrary to popular belief, a silent (or mostly silent) birth is possible (even if you're not a Scientologist!).
This pain can be felt as strong cramping in the abdomen, groin, and back, as well as an achy feeling. Some women experience pain in their sides or thighs as well. Other causes of pain during labor include pressure on the bladder and bowels by the baby's head and the stretching of the birth canal and vagina.
But medical advice advances with research. “Randomized control trials have shown no decrease in infections with hair removal and, in fact, have shown a slight increase with shaving compared to clipping or waxing before procedures. Hospital infection control doesn't recommend [shaving] at this time.”
Laboring down is the process of not actively pushing once the second stage of labor and intense contractions begin. Some people wait one to two hours before pushing, which allows the baby to naturally move down the birth canal. Laboring down has risks and benefits.
Until recently, women have been asked to start pushing as soon as the cervix has dilated to 10 centimeters, but as long as you do not have a fever and your baby's heart rate is normal, there are many benefits to waiting to push until you feel the need to push.
Your ribs may have expanded, and your hips will often widen to make it easier for the baby to exit the birth canal. For some women wider ribs and hips will be permanent. As your baby grows during pregnancy you will gain weight . This helps to support your baby before and after birth.
The episiotomy tradition
Experts believed an incision would heal better than a natural tear. The procedure was also thought to help preserve the muscles and connective tissue that support the pelvic floor. Today, however, research suggests that routine episiotomies don't prevent these problems after all.
Bleeding often lasts for around for four to six weeks, but could last up to 12 weeks after your baby's born (RCOG, 2016). If you're worried, you can talk to a health professional. Bleeding will start off heavy and red to browny red. It will become lighter in colour and flow over time (NHS, 2021).
No matter how you delivered your baby, the postpartum recovery period is generally considered to be the first six weeks after childbirth. This doesn't mean that at six weeks you'll magically bounce back to pre-baby condition.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends women take at least six weeks off work following childbirth.
