(added March 14, 2022) After you verify your identity and tax return information using this service, it may take up to nine weeks to complete the processing of the return. Visit Where's My Refund? or use the IRS2Go mobile app 2-3 weeks after using this service to check your refund status.
The ATO will contact you if they need more information. This is the final stage. What is the processing time for Government EasyPay? Payments take approximately 24-48 hours to be credited to your ATO customer account. Payments made after 6.00pm (AEST), or on weekends or public holidays will be processed the next business day.
Credit or debit card payments can take up to four business days to be processed to your account. If you've paid another government agency using Government EasyPay, contact your financial institution or card provider immediately.

Hence sometimes the 'we apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe' simply means that your tax return requires special handling, which is why its review will take longer than usual.
