Weeks 2-3: The tattoo has a shine
“After a week or two, the scabbing will flake away into a shiny or waxy layer of skin,” says Milliron. Any itchiness should subside at this point but your tattooed skin still won't look entirely back to normal. That's because it's not yet fully healed.
It may take several months for your tattoo to fully heal and for the wrinkles to completely smooth out. If after several months your tattoo is still wrinkly, it may be a sign that it was not taken care of properly during the healing process.
After about a month your tattoo will have healed and it feels as if the tattoo colours have already become part of your skin. The skin feels smooth, and the epidermis is completely healed.
From 1 to 6 months
After a month, any itching and redness should have completely gone. In fact, your new tattoo may look fully healed! However, the skin under your tattoo can continue to repair itself for up to six months until it's considered healed. During this stage it's important to keep up your aftercare routine.

Until the surface of the tattoo is healed (at a minimum of two to three weeks), wash the area gently 2-3 times per day. What Does An Over-Moisturised Tattoo Look Like? Signs of an over-moisturised tattoo include irritated, inflamed skin; scabs may appear on the tattoo, or the skin may look redder on and around the tattooed area. What's more, the ink could appear slightly blurred.
When you over moisturize your tattoo, you can actually delay the healing process. Excess moisture in the skin creates the perfect environment for bacteria and germ growth, so one of the key signs is irritated, inflamed skin. Another key sign of over moisturizing is clogged skin.
A patchy tattoo could be the result of bad technique; if the artist hasn't made sure the ink is deep enough to stay put. It could also be due to them not 'packing' the ink enough; certain ink colours, or areas of concentrated black, often need to be packed in quite a lot in order to create a solid area of colour.
Signs of an Overworked Tattoo
A Change in Appearance - If the tattoo looks faded, pale, cloudy, blurry, or heavily distorted, this could be a sign of overworked skin. This may also appear as ink distortion and blurring. During a tattoo, ink needs to be deposited in your dermis so the pigment stays put.
Generally speaking, smaller tattoos with less ink peel off up to 1 week. For larger tattoos with more ink, it might take up to 2 weeks to fully finish peeling. Don't worry if your tattoo hasn't started peeling within five days or is taking longer than two weeks to peel.
You may have heard some rumours that Bepanthen shouldn't be used on new tattoos, but this absolutely isn't the case. Bepanthen is by far one of the most highly recommended tattoo aftercare products and is the go-to ointment for most tattoo artists and studios.
During the first two-ish days, you're gonna want to avoid lotions, but once you start to feel some tightening, drying, and peeling a couple of days after application, that's when you'll want to start using light layers of lotion after washing it. But—and this is important—don't reach for just any old lotion.
Day 5-12: Depending on how fast you heal you'll start seeing the skin looking a little rough at this point. The top layer of skin has healed and the damaged cells on top will be starting to shed. You may have some scabs or peeling skin but it's no longer bleeding or seeping unless you've scratched a scab free.
Tattoo Care After 2 Weeks – Days 15 to 30
If your tattoo looks dry and dull, continue to moisturize to rehydrate the skin. It may take another month or two for the lower layers of skin to completely heal, at which point the tattoo should look as bright and vivid as you expected, and as the artist intended.
There are many different reasons that your tattoo may be raised, including weather conditions, your individual body chemistry, or an allergic reaction. However, raised skin is usually just a normal part of the healing process.
