George Lucas wanted viewers (and characters in the films) to hone in on what Yoda was saying because he was so full of wisdom.
Does Yoda speak backwards on purpose? He doesn't speak backwards. He just uses a different sentence structure. The reasoning is that he's supposed to be very old and revered, so George Lucas used the speech pattern as a way to present archaic and very formal tone.
Yoda's speech structure is object-subject-verb, or OSV, which adds into the mystery of his species and makes him more alien.
He doesn't “speak in reverse”. He speaks with an OSV word order (Object-Subject-Verb, “The book I read”). This sounds very strange to you, who speak an SVO language, “I read the book”.
Even more unusual is the way Yoda famously speaks, ordering his sentences object-subject-verb, or OSV: The lightsaber Yoda grasped. Or, to use an example from an actual Yoda utterance: “Much to learn, you still have.”
Although his choice to help with the droid attack on the Wookiees seemed to be a prudent one in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Yoda's Kashyyyk mission was actually his worst mistake.

"The scriptwriters are doing something to make Yoda sound weird.

The second time Yoda mentions his long life is in Return of the Jedi, when he tells Luke, “When you reach 900 years old, you will not look as good as you will.” If we take Yoda at his word, that means the Jedi Master died at the ripe old age of 900.

The character's name was later changed to be “Minch Yoda” in the first draft of The Empire Strikes Back screenplay by Leigh Brackett. The name was changed again to the shorter “Yoda.”
