Dream came into existence once lifeforms capable of dreaming appeared in the universe. Dream was one of the Endless, personifications of ideas and concepts that were tied to life, and were fated to fulfill their functions until the universe ended and all life disappeared from the cosmos.
Dream Of The Endless
The Endless are the personifications of concepts that will exist as long as life inhabits the universe. Gaiman's creations, The Endless are Dream's immediate family: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, the twins Desire and Despair, and Delirium, who was previously named Delight.
Dream is the true name of the titular SandmanOpens in new tab, who is also known as Morpheus. He is the anthropomorphic embodiment of dreams, hence the name. He is one of the most powerful beings in the universe and, like his other siblings in the Endless, is immortal.
From oldest to youngest they are: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium, who was previously known as Delight.
Destruction, also known as "The Prodigal," abandoned his duty entirely. If one of the Endless is destroyed, they are replaced by another part of their duty; however, this does not happen if they are just absent or inactive.
Dream, who goes by the name Morpheus, is the second most powerful of all of the Endless, in part because his realm contains aspects of his siblings while being its own unique division.
Father Time is the personification of Time and rules over his domain. Time is the father to the Endless and with his partner Night, made all of Creation possible. However, in present times, Time and Night are separated and estranged from their families.
The Endless: Destruction Is the Missing Prodigal
The Endless, in order of appearance in the universe, are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, twins Desire and Despair, and Delirium, who was once known as Delight. The seven are much more than mere gods: they are personifications of core aspects of conscious existence.
While every human being so far as we know exhibits REM sleep, not every human being reports dreams. It appears you can have REM sleep with very low dream recall or possibly without dreams entirely. There may even be groups of individuals who never recall their dreams or who do not dream.
Hob Gadling appears in the 2022 TV series based on The Sandman. Just like previously, he was granted immortality and agelessness by Death; with Dream meeting him on the same day once a century, to see if he would be ready to accept dying.
She may not have been there when the universe began, but she will be there when it comes to an end. Only then will she meet her own end. Death is the strongest of the Endless because of how necessary she is, and because she will be the last of them to exist.
Upon the destruction of Dream by the Kindle Ones, Morpheus' essence then was drawn to Daniel, who was then transformed into the new Lord of Dreams.
The older an Endless is, the more powerful they are. However, despite being the second-oldest Endless, Death is said to be their most powerful member. On the other end of the spectrum is Delirium, the weakest, who is personified by a teenage girl with different colored eyes.
More than a mere personification of abstract concepts, each Endless is the idea itself, making them immune to death or destruction. While even god can be slain, a fallen Endless is merely replaced by another version of itself because the universe cannot function without these concepts.
The Presence is the Sandman universe's equivalent of a Supreme Being, and he shares many characteristics with the standard Abrahamic God, such as almost never taking a physical form, being a Creator deity, and having unmatched power.
Immortality: As the personification of all dreams in the universe, Dream was both ageless and immortal. He will continue to exist so long as one sentient being is capable of dreaming. Being an Endless, Dream can only be hurt by means that he allows.
Non-Immersive Imagery and Sleep Thinking
Experiences during sleep qualify as dreamless if they lack the immersive character of dreaming. Examples are isolated or static visuospatial, auditory, or kinesthetic imagery lacking a clear hallucinatory context, movement sensations, and propositional thought (sleep thinking).
It may seem that way, but it is impossible. It is believed that the human brain is incapable of “creating” a new face. Every person you dream of has been someone you have either known personally or merely came across looking through your friend's Facebook photos.
While recalling a dream suggests that you've reached a REM sleep cycle at some point during the night, it doesn't necessarily mean that you've had more or less of that important stage of sleep than if you don't remember dreaming.
One such Endless sibling who sparks intrigue is the being known as The Prodigal. While there are other siblings that have been mentioned and not featured in the series, The Prodigal's absence raises more eyebrows than rest.
Death is the second oldest of the Endless and the elder sister of Dream. To the ancient Greeks, she was known as Teleute. A generally kind and upbeat individual, though this was not always the case, billions of years ago she was quite cold and pragmatic.
7 Delirium
Delirium is the youngest of the Endless, but she's still millions of years old. Occupying a chaotic realm, she serves as the personification of delirium and sanity and she can induce both in others.
Later revealed during events of Sandman: Overture, The Seven siblings do in-fact have parents, with their father being Time, the personification of time itself and their mother being Night, the personification of the endless darkness of the universe that existed before the dawn of the universe.
By the time he returns the Kindly Ones are in the heart of the Dreaming. Morpheus summons his sister Death, who kills him. Morpheus dies. It's not a comic book death (except, technically it is, but you know what I mean).
A winsome and engaging (yet tough as nails) young woman, prone to a Goth appearance and Egyptian adornment (Ankh), and eye makeup (the Eye of Hours), Death is the second oldest of the Endless and the only one allowed to travel freely through the others' realms without first asking permission.
