Red or reddish-brown stains are deposits from the water, or transferred from objects left in the sink. Typically, when red spots appear on a stainless steel sink it is simply surface discoloration due to iron and mineral deposits in the water, or transferred from an object left in the sink.
Removal of oxidized stains and even “surface rust” can be done by using a paste made from baking soda and water or a cleaner that contains oxalic acid, such as Bar Keepers Friend Soft Cleanser. If using baking soda and water, use a cloth or soft bristle brush to rub the baking soda paste in the direction of the grain.

Brown spots can develop on the stainless steel surface if you use the wrong cleaning solutions or if rust begins to develop. Remove these stains with mild cleaning solutions, and don't ever use strong chemicals such as bleach, as they can damage or discolor the stainless steel.
Overheating or allowing cookware to boil dry can cause yellow, brown, dark purple, blue or rainbow tints on the stainless steel surface. Stainless steel contains chromium, and when exposed to oxygen it forms a thin invisible layer called chromium oxide. Rust can form when this layer is damaged from exposure to cleaners, chloride, high humidity, high salinity environments, and/or mechanical abrasions.
One of the most effective ways to restore a stainless steel finish is by using vinegar and baking soda. Start by mixing equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
