One reason is so that more than one person can use the facilities in privacy. I can brush my teeth and wash my face at the sink, while the toilet area is being used by someone else. This is helpful for larger families or when there is only one bathroom in a home.
Indoor plumbing was an innovation in the Victorian era. In middle-class homes having a separate room for bathing was often a luxury. Bathroom sinks situated in bedrooms to serve as a washing station were common.
A: Because the sink/vanity is usually next to the door, and the tub/shower is at the back wall. Guess where that leaves the space for the toilet.
Try to place the toilet facing an open wall or door, if possible, rather than a fixture. Generally, this will ensure enough clearance room in front of the toilet. For other bathrooms, aim for a 30-inch front clearance space for the toilet.
A toilet should have some elbow room between it and another fixture or vanity. The NKBA's recommendation is at least 18″. Codes allow a minimum distance of 15″.
Plan a clear floor space of at least 30 inches from the front edge of all fixtures (lavatory, toilet, bidet, tub, and shower) to any opposite bath fixture, wall, or obstacle. Code Requirements: A minimum space of 21 inches must be planned in front of the lavatory, toilet, bidet, and tub.
To builders nowadays, a water closet refers to a room with just a toilet, although some companies, such as Richmond American Homes, will include water closets in the same category as a powder room or a half bath—a room with a toilet plus a sink.
A powder room is also known as a half bath or guest bath. It only has two of the four main components that a bathroom should have, typically a toilet and a sink.
These types of bathrooms do exist, and they are referred to as quarter-bathrooms. These quarter-bathrooms are quite rare simply due to the fact that they contain only one of the 4 main elements of a bathroom. The most commonly seen are those that contain a shower and are typically found at beaches or pools.
ADA Compliance: Space is needed to allow for easier maneuverability for patrons in a wheelchair. The gap allows toe space for wheelchair users which allows more room to move within the stalls. 9″ minimum toe space is required per ADA guidelines.
Finding the Source of the Problem. A constantly running toilet indicates that the system is either allowing water to pass continuously through the flush valve flapper or that the water within the tank is flowing into the overflow tube.
1910s: Sanitary Look
Known as the sanitary look, bathrooms also featured white porcelain toilets, bathtubs and basins. On the The Block, a 1910-inspired bathroom was created with a white basin on a white panel vanity, with subway tiles on the walls and lightly-grey floor tiles.
Benefits of Bathroom Windows
The primary reason your bathroom needs at least one window is to effectively remove moisture from the air. Without a window or some type of ventilation system, this moisture can spur mildew and mold growth, which can jeopardize the health of your family.
They explained: "The simple reason why kitchen sinks have traditionally been placed under the window is that the window is, obviously, on an outside wall. In terms of plumbing, using as short a waste pipe as possible from the sink to the drains is not only the most effective but also the cheapest, solution.
It is convenient to have a walk-in wardrobe in the bathroom as one does not have to step into the bedroom from the bathroom to get dressed. Another plus is that a walk-in-wardrobe within the bathroom offers greater privacy when getting dressed.
In British English, "bathroom" is a common term but is typically reserved for private rooms primarily used for bathing; a room without a bathtub or shower is more often known as a "WC", an abbreviation for water closet, "lavatory", or "loo".
Being able to look through someone's bathroom wall and see them in the shower, that means something else. A growing number of hotels have been featuring “peek-a-boo bathrooms” — bathrooms that are separated from the rest of the room by a transparent partition or, in some cases, nothing at all.
A Jack and Jill Bathroom is a bathroom that has two doors and is usually accessible from two bedrooms.
While Crapper did exist (and likely is the man behind the more scatological term for the loo), it was England's John Harington who developed a modern working toilet nearly 300 years before Crapper was born.
As with many English words, some are common in American English and others are common in British English. However, words such as: bathroom, ladies room, men's room and restroom are common to both.
In Medieval England, people used "potties" and would simply throw their contents through a door or window into the street. The more affluent would use a "garderobe", a protruding room with an opening for waste, suspended over a moat (above right).
Well, to put it simply, despite not appearing in any building regulations, all bathroom doors should swing inwards. And there are a number of very good reasons for this, which we'll get on to shortly. As you go about your daily life, you shouldn't ever encounter outward-swinging toilet doors.
As opposed to a traditional full bath, a three-quarter bath is usually characterized by an efficient combination of standing shower, sink and toilet. This simple but useful design is often used for guest bathrooms, and it can add tremendous utility and value to your home.
