The hollowness of the spoon is actually used in the process of blending the McFlurry. The spoon is designed to fit snugly into the machine that blends in the toppings. The TikTok creator explained: "You see, McDonalds didn't want to clean their beaters after every McFlurry, so instead they designed a spoon that would also work as the mixer.
It turns out they're not for drinking at all. A supposed McDonald's employee posted a video on social media showing exactly what the spoons – that certainly look like straws as well – are really for, and the internet is blown away.
"The McFlurry spoon was invented by an employee at one of McDonald's suppliers, Flurry International, in 1995," McDonald's explains. "Since then, the McFlurry spoon design has been an iconic part of the dessert's experience!"
