A version of himself who wanted to violently murder him, was fully capable of doing so and whom Peter barely managed to survive against in each encounter. Spider-Man's unusual fear of Venom was the product of the above factors working in tandem.

In addition to seemingly having largely the same powers as Venom himself, the Anti-Venom symbiote burns and destroys symbiotes like antibodies attacking a virus. The Anti-Venom symbiote is made to kill symbiotes and would ultimately overwhelm Venom himself.

The Venom symbiote has two major weaknesses - sound and fire. Loud noises cause the symbiote to writhe in pain. That's how Peter Parker originally freed himself of the symbiote.
The symbiote attached itself to his suit that he was wearing at the time. It drastically enhanced Peter's various powers, but it also brought out a lot of aggression in Peter's personality, causing him to become more arrogant and violent. Eventually, Peter successfully ripped off the symbiote using a church bell.

Regardless, Venom is able to allow his host to breathe in any environment. In the comics, readers have seen Venom and his host survive in space and underwater.
