Gaiman's graphic novel has been challenged and removed from some libraries because of “anti-family themes,” “offensive language,” and for being “unsuited for age group.” Most often, opposition to the series has arisen when it has been shelved in the young adult section of the library.

The series's history as a banned book spans back as far back as the year it was published, as it's themes were “unsuitable to a specific age group” (that group being teens and young adults). One case in 2003 involved parents' opposition of the book in the YA section of the library.
Coraline is, however, a “challenged” book: challenged because of its scarier themes and because some consider it inappropriate for the age group it's intended for (the age of its title heroine, Coraline, which is never clearly stated in the book but seems to be between 10 and 13, if we can judge by the movie at all).

Her paranoia and disorientation play not only into her diagnosis of schizophrenia, but also her deteriorating mental and physical health. She does well to hide it from her parents and seems to control it by the end of the film, but it's very possible that it will only get worse from here.
It was given this age rating for strong language, graphic violence, sex, self-harm, nudity, suicide, blood and gore, and smoking. There will be many disturbing scenes that parents would deem unsuitable for younger kids to watch. Overall, The Sandman is meant to be watched by mature audiences only.
Neil Gaiman's original work is a piece of dark fantasy, so while it's a comic book (albeit celebrated), kids shouldn't even read that. Netflix's "The Sandman" is rated TV-MA for a reason, and parents should take heed before letting their kids sit down to watch it, especially when it comes to Episode 5, "24/7."

Violence and gore in the series is graphic and intense, and drinking and drugs is not shown so much. There is a bit of nudity from the side but no sensitive parts are shown. There isn't a lot of sex and it isn't graphic, there's mostly just kissing and touching, but viewers will decide if they can handle it.
Many people wonder if the Sandman is a villain. In the comics, the Sandman is neither good nor bad. He has a lot of power and responsibility as the authority of dreams and nightmares. Still, throughout his story, he makes many questionable decisions and displays a frequently shifting moral compass.
