The writer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has explained the reasoning behind a surprise character return in the film. In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe feature, Killmonger (Michael B Jordan), the villain from the first film, returned in a brief cameo when Shuri (Letitia Wright) visited the Ancestral Plane.
One of those characters not only makes a return—even though he's dead—but winds up tying into the overarching narrative in a clever way. That character? None other than Erik "Killmonger" Stevens (Michael B. Jordan).
He's in the movie—but not in the way you think. There wasn't some magic done that makes Killmonger somehow alive. In fact, the movie doubles down on him being dead because the way we get to see him is in the ancestral plane.
Jordan has finally allowed himself to open up on his stunning return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after his shocking cameo appearance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Shuri is the new Black Panther.
But ultimately, it stays in the family, with T'Challa's sister becoming the new Black Panther. Shuri is played by Letitia Wright, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige said this to Variety about the decision: “Letitia was hired because she, No. 1, was a great actor, but No.
King M'Baku is the current King of Wakanda and leader of the Jabari Tribe, a group of Wakandans who had removed themselves from mainstream society. Initially a staunch opponent of T'Challa's rule, M'Baku ends up torn between challenging him for the throne only to help him defend Wakanda from Erik Killmonger.
Earning T'Challa's forgiveness, Killmonger decided to die, painfully removing the spearhead from his body, bleeding out and dying peacefully.

During a subsequent duel with T'Challa, Killmonger is killed by Monica Rambeau, whom he had previously captured and imprisoned. Killmonger's young son is last seen swearing vengeance against Black Panther, much like N'Jadaka had done years earlier after the death of his own father.
Michael B. Jordan has finally spoken out about his surprise return to the MCU as Killmonger in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The villain became an instant classic when he debuted in 2018, and his death didn't keep people from hoping he'd somehow play a role in this year's sequel.
But few expected the movie to deliver a second gut-punching death. T'Challa's mother, Queen Ramonda, dies midway through “Wakanda Forever.” She drowns during Namor's (Tenoch Huerta) attack on Wakanda, which sets Shuri (Letitia Wright) on a path of revenge against him in the third act.

Erik Killmonger is a fictional character and one of the main antagonists in Marvel Comics, serving as the main antagonist of the Black Panther comic book series. He is a terroristic supervillain who became a sworn adversary of King T'Challa.
It was eventually confirmed that Shuri is the new Black Panther in the movie's story. As part of a new interview with Rolling Stone, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's co-writer, Joe Robert Cole, confirmed that Winston Duke's M'Baku and Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia were initially considered to be the MCU's new Black Panther.
Jordan is in 'Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever'? Although it's unexpected, Michael does make a cameo as Killmonger in the Black Panther sequel.

Previously, the Marvel movie's promotional materials had kept the identity of the new Black Panther — a huge talking point going into the movie after Chadwick Boseman's death — a secret. Now, however, after some time in theatres, the movie has confirmed publicly that Letitia Wright's Shuri is the new Black Panther.
