After a scar is first formed, the body continues to touch up its work where it can - which is why scars fade slightly over the years when left alone. But scar tissue does not get replaced by this process2, which means that most scars, when left to heal naturally, will never fully disappear.
Keloid scars
A keloid scar is an overgrowth of tissue that happens when too much collagen is produced at the site of a wound. The scar keeps growing, even after the wound has healed. Keloid scars are raised above the skin and can be pink, red, the same colour or darker than surrounding skin.
A scar may fade so much that you can barely see it, but it never completely goes away. Some scars cause problems months or years later. As nerve endings grow back, the scar may become painful or itchy. Skin cancer can develop in scars, especially in burn scars.
At the end of the day, scars are permanent. No matter how much the tissue heals, the addition of so much new scar tissue will leave some record of the trial that you've undergone. However, all scars can be treated, and with frequent applications of these treatments, much of the scar can disappear.
These areas include the ears, the top of the shoulder and the area in front of the breastbone (sternum). There are lots of theories as to why this may be. Some people have suggested that it is due to the genes at these sites which have a more angry response to injury.
Scars can form from injuries, surgery, acne and burns. There are four main types of scar which form differently and require different treatments. Old scars are harder to treat, but their appearance can be reduced over time.

A scar is a mark left on the skin after a wound or injury has healed. Scars are a natural part of the healing process. Most will fade and become paler over time, although they never completely disappear.
Bio-Oil helps to improve the appearance of new or old scars; whether from surgery, accidents, burns, insect bites, scratches or conditions such as acne or chickenpox. Although younger scars will have a greater chance of improvement, studies have shown that older scars also benefit from regular use of Bio-Oil.
“This is a rare instance where aging actually improves the body's ability to heal rather than diminishing it,” Leung said. “When we're younger, we secrete more SDF1 into the blood stream to form scars, but as we age, we lose this ability, which allows tissue to regenerate.”
The cells in the superficial or upper layers of skin, known as the epidermis, are constantly replacing themselves. This process of renewal is basically exfoliation (shedding) of the epidermis. But the deeper layers of skin, called the dermis, do not go through this cellular turnover and so do not replace themselves.
Because of the chaotic ways that the fibers are forming and the cross-tension pulls that scar tissue causes, it is not as strong as normal tissue and is more likely to tear and cause a problem.
Scars appear worse. Hence with maturity, an acne scar patient has to deal with pre-existing scars in addition to the signs of aging. Most patients notice worsening of scars when they reach their late 30s to early 40s.
Old wounds open.
There isn't enough collagen left in your body to continue creating scar tissue, so old wounds may start opening.
Fibroblasts, which are cells that form during scar tissue growth, are responsible for fibrosis. If the fibroblasts do not clear over time, they cause prolonged inflammation. Other symptoms associated with scar tissue include itching, swelling, and tenderness or sensitivity.
It can take up to 12-18 months after your injury or operation for a scar to heal. A normal scar will become darker initially and after a period of time this will start to fade. Dark scars can remain for years or indefinitely in people with darker skin.
They may never completely disappear, however they are likely to become so small that you won't notice them anymore.
There are many factors that go into the natural healing process, each of which can make it faster or slower. How long it takes a scar to heal depends on many elements. Some influences include the type and severity of the injury, skin type, nutrition and use of scar treatment products.
Silicone tape can be used on all areas of the body provided the area has healed adequately and you have been advised it is okay to proceed with applying the tape to the surgical site. These tapes can also be used on both new and old scars.
Mederma states that the cream is effective for both new and old scars due to acne, surgeries, burns, and cuts. The main active ingredient in Mederma Advanced Scar Gel is allantoin, which helps moisturize and hydrate the skin cells to reduce the appearance of scars.
Laser treatment can also make a scar less noticeable, but it cannot get rid of a scar. When you have laser scar treatment, you're replacing one scar with another less-noticeable scar. 2. Your results depend largely on the skills of the person performing the laser treatment.
