From World War II to the swinging 1960s to to the Scottish Highlands of the 18th century, the show uses not just time travel but also flashbacks—which, confusingly, sometimes actually take us forward in time—to transport its characters and its viewers.
These stones come into play time and again on Outlander: Claire travels through the stones at Craigh na Dun in 1746 when Jamie brings her back to them in order to keep their baby safe, and then one more time in 1968 when she travels back to be reunited with her one, true love in 1766.
According to author Diana Gabaldon (via Diana Gabaldon), Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp was born in October 1918 and Jamie (played by Sam Heughan who stars with House of the Dragon's Graham McTavish in the other Scottish Starz series, Men in Kilts) was born in 1721. This means that the pair are actually 197 years apart.
