Wear vertical stripes. Thin, vertical stripes will create a visual illusion which makes you look thinner and taller (making the two sides of your body appear to be closer together). Avoid big patterns (and most other patterns really), as these can easily make you look bigger instead of smaller.
Line up. Vertical lines draw the eye up and down, rather than side to side, giving you a taller and narrower look. Think of vertical striped shirts and pinstriped business suits, though we wouldn't recommend wearing these together. As a rule, the closer the vertical lines are, the slimmer the look.
Black never fails to make you look slim and elegant. Darker shades of colors like blue, purple and brown can also help to hide flaws and create a slimming illusion. On the other hand, lighter colors, like white and khaki, can add pounds and give the illusion of a larger frame.
All black is always chic, but other dark colors are equally slimming. Give deep greens, reds, and blues a try: The monochrome look will create a long vertical line, making your body seem tall and lean.
Go big on top, narrow on bottom
If you like the idea of belly camouflage but want to show some shape too, let opposites attract. Pair any full-cut top, blouse, jacket or tunic with a slim base of trim pants, leggings or straight or skinny jeans (here's where the latter come in handy even if you no longer love them).
Cotton, denim, silk, or wool gabardine are generally on the slimmer side and won't add any extra volume. Wide wale corduroy, on the other hand, along with crushed velvet, leather, suede, mohair, angora, taffeta, boucle, and flannel, tend to be a bit bulkier.
Dull finishes absorb light and generally make the figure look smaller. They are suitable for all figures. Shiny fabrics make the figure appear larger and reveal figure irregularities. Shiny fabrics are best for average to slim figures that have regular proportions.
That said, sometimes an extremely tight fit (think a figure-hugging bandage dress) can actually make you look bigger. Unless the garment will stretch with wear, look for pieces that fit just a fraction larger than your frame, says Matthew Burton.
Slimming colors other than black
But, black isn't the only dark option for slimming clothing. Try playing with dark greens, reds, navy blue, and grays to add some extra excitement to your outfit and have a slimming effect.
Go ombre with your hair.
"Dark colors recede and make your face seem slimmer," he says. The ombre trick works best with deeper brunette shades, so consider dyeing your hair darker if it's naturally light, he adds.
To achieve the appearance you want, whether that's to look taller, shorter, thinner, or wider, incorporate patterns in your wardrobe that best complement your body type. Of course, patterns can't physically change your body's size, but using them to look more proportional will help even you out visually.

Flattering fabrics
Stretchy materials are usually best. You want something that pulls into you. Spandex blends are great. The key is to have the dress tight enough that it gives you a great shape, but not so tight that it shows every single part of you (and stops you breathing!)

Too loud prints can make you look bigger. A patternless, printless fabric is best for a slimming look, but if you want to wear print, choose smaller prints or limit prints to problem areas of your body. You should go for small and vertical patterns that make you look slimmer.
