Around age 4 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) is when most children exemplify that they have the interest and fine motor skills necessary to learn to write their name.
Some children will learn to write their name when they are 2 or 3 (this is rare, don't feel like your 3 year old should be able to write their name) while others are still having difficulty when they are in year 1 (this is something that I would certainly be working on, but I see it often enough to know its common).
However, most experts agree that children should begin to recognise letter sounds by 4 or 5 years old, and be able to spell simple words by 6 or 7. For example, a 3 year old should be able to spell their name and other short words like “dog” and “cat”.
To demonstrate, by the age of three, there are many physical milestones a child should reach. Check out the following list of physical achievements to gauge your child's development. Most children at this age will be able to write their name, write some letters of the alphabet, and draw simple shapes.
It's exciting when your child's scribbles begin to look more like real letters. Some threes even start writing their name, or a few letters of it. But writing is one of those developmental milestones that varies greatly from child to child. Don't stress out if your child isn't even interested in writing.
In terms of skill level, most 2-year-olds can make a 'v,' a circle, and vertical or horizontal lines, although not with utmost control. By three, some children will be trying to write some letters or make “tadpole” people, which marks an important transition to representational uses of symbols.
Most children begin recognizing some letters between the ages of 2 and 3 and can identify most letters between 4 and 5. This means that you can start teaching your child the alphabet when they're around 2 – but don't expect full mastery for some time.
Most 3-year-olds can count to three and know the names of some of the numbers up to ten. Your child is also starting to recognize numbers from one to nine. He'll be quick to point it out if he receives fewer cookies than his playmate.

Advanced Sentence Structures
By age 3, a gifted child's language may already resemble adult speech. They are able to use time markers, like now, later, first, and then, which—along with their advanced vocabulary and more complete sentences—allow them to carry on full conversations with adults.
Begin to grow your child's awareness of the letters of her name by starting with the initial letter and pointing it out often in everyday print that you come into contact with — on signs, cereal boxes, book covers, etc. You can say, “I can see a T. Your name, Tomo, starts with T. '
Gentry (1982), building on Read's research, describes five stages: precommunicative, semiphonetic, phonetic, transitional, and correct.
Though every child is different, most toddlers will be able to count to 10 by the time they are two-years-old. At this point in time they are probably repeating them mostly by memory and have yet to understand what they actually mean. This concept is known as “rote” counting.
Your 2-year-old now
First a child is able to identify when there is one, and more than one (though not whether it's two or six). By age 2, a child can count to two ("one, two"), and by 3, he can count to three, but if he can make it all the way up to 10, he's probably reciting from rote memory.
Around age 2: Kids start recognizing some letters and can sing or say aloud the “ABC” song. Around age 3: Kids may recognize about half the letters in the alphabet and start to connect letters to their sounds. (Like s makes the /s/ sound.)
Children can dress and undress themselves by around the age of 3. This depends on how much practice they've had and how much interest they've shown. Often, younger children in a family learn how to dress themselves earlier than older siblings did.
Around the ages of four and five, your child is likely to start developing some basic reading skills, such as phonemic awareness, and may even know some sight words. At this stage, your child may also know how to spell his or her name and recognize the letters of the alphabet.
Preschool (3-4 years old) – Start to make marks and lines that resemble objects (drawing), can begin to master some pre-writing lines (vertical, horizontal, and circle shapes as an example). May write some letters of the alphabet, typically the ones in their name. Pencil grasp is still developing.
A two-year-old may not be able to understand the concept of colors completely but they should be able to identify at least one color at this age. By this time, the child should learn how to name colors and identify basic shapes and numbers.
Between the ages of two and four, children's ability to understand the actual concept of numbers and counting improves dramatically. Most children are counting up to ten, or even beyond, by age four.
Most kids will know at least one color by age three and by mid-year may be able to name more while most 4-year-olds know and can point to even more colors. It is essential to keep adding fun color activities and references in everyday chats.
Signs your kid may be gifted
Keen observation, curiosity and tendency to ask questions. Ability to think abstractly, while showing signs of creativity and inventiveness. Early development of motor skills (e.g., balance, coordination and movement). Finds joy in discovering new interests or grasping new concepts.
While most children at age 2 are experimenting with onomatopoeia (words that describe noises, like “beep beep!”) and starting to ask questions (“Where's Dada?”), a more advanced child might already be speaking in longer sentences with many verbs, such as, “I played and I jumped and I sang!” says Fujimoto.
Hyperlexia is advanced and unexpected reading skills and abilities in children way beyond their chronological age. It is a fairly recently named condition (1967) although earlier descriptions of precocious reading do exist.
