And while he wasn't evil, he wasn't good, either. However, there is one good Sith. Revan's fall saved the Republic and delayed Vitiate's invasion long enough that the Republic could survive. Darth Vectivus closed a mine emitting harmful dark side energy to protect his workers.
There are Sith who may have done some rotten things in their time, yet cannot be classed as completely and inherently evil.
While many characters both in and out of the Star Wars universe consider Jedi good and Sith evil, things aren't always so clear-cut. Just as some Jedi suffer from corruption or menace, several Sith have shown compassion and affection.
In short, Sith subscribed to the philosophy of self-promotion and aggrandization at the expense of others. Anyone who advocated otherwise would not have been considered a true Sith. So, yes, Sith had to be evil in order to be considered a true Sith.

While their stories are similar, Darth Revan went even further than Vader. Whereas Vader bowed to Darth Sidious, Darth Revan was so powerful that he bowed to no one, becoming the sole leader of the Sith. He was able to do what Vader did but even greater.
While good triumphing over evil is the typical outcome in most Star Wars stories, it can still be fun to root for the fictional bad guys from time to time. And when it comes to antagonists in the Star Wars universe, topping the terrifying presence that is Darth Vader is a tall order.
