Can I menstruate without ovulating? In the medical world, menstruation happens when an egg that's released from your ovary isn't fertilized, so the uterus sheds its lining. Because of this, you cannot technically menstruate without ovulating. However, you can still bleed — experience a “period” — without ovulating.
But if you don't ovulate, the endometrium can still be shed and cause bleeding when it can't sustain itself or when your estrogen level drops. If your periods are irregular, you may be dealing with oligovulation. And, unfortunately, you may also be dealing with infertility.
A menstrual cycle that's too long (35 days or more), too short (less than 21 days), irregular or absent can mean that you're not ovulating. There might be no other signs or symptoms.
You can check it on your own with the help of ovulation tests and basal body temperature charts. Anovulatory cycles can be suspected in case of irregular menstruation, if the cycle is significantly shortened (shorter than 21 days) or too long (longer than 35 days).
This results in bleeding that is not in a regular pattern. This type of bleeding can be heavier and last longer than your normal menstrual bleeding. Again, depending on the underlying cause of the anovulation, the bleeding may simply be light spotting.
Although individuals with an anovulatory cycle do not experience ovulation, they may still experience bleeding due to changes in hormone levels. This bleeding is usually referred to as withdrawal bleeding.
The answer to this is complicated. A light period is a period that lasts less than two days, and there is very little blood during this time. Light periods do not usually mean that you are less fertile, but it can make it more difficult for you to get pregnant.
When a person is anovulatory, they cannot get pregnant because there is no egg to be fertilized. If a person has irregular ovulation, they will have fewer chances to conceive because they ovulate less frequently. Late ovulation does not produce the best quality eggs, which can also make fertilization less likely.
An anovulatory cycle is a menstrual cycle characterized by the absence of ovulation, and the inability to get pregnant. In a regular ovulatory cycle, hormone changes drive the ovary to release an egg. If the egg meets sperm in the uterine tube, fertilization can happen and embryo development starts.

Medications to restore fertility
Fertility drugs generally work like natural hormones — follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) — to trigger ovulation. They're also used in women who ovulate to try to stimulate a better egg or an extra egg or eggs.
Weight loss and weight gain, excessive physical exercise, and chronic stress induce an anovulatory state which is called “functional hypothalamic amenorrhea” (FHA). This condition is one of the main causes of secondary amenorrhea.
Some common reasons include stress, not timing baby-making sex with ovulation, residual effects of hormonal birth control, and certain health conditions. As much as we may try, pregnancy really can't really be planned—but you can increase your chances by being aware of common pitfalls.
If regular menstruation occurs, we can assume that ovulation takes place regularly as well. However, the assumption that heavier periods lead to higher fertility is not correct. In this context, it is much more important that periods are as regular and healthy as possible.

Even women with PCOS who have regular periods often have menstrual cycles without ovulation. Lack of ovulation is the root cause of many reproductive system problems that women with PCOS often face: menstrual irregularities and infertility. If there is no ovulation, there is no production of progesterone.
Fertility declines with age in both men and women, but the effects of age are much greater in women. In their 30s, women are about half as fertile as they are in their early 20s, and women's chance of conception declines significantly after age 35. While ovulation bleeding is a common reason for bleeding between periods, it is not the only potential cause. Therefore, it is important to monitor the bleeding and talk to a doctor about any bothersome symptoms.
