Airlocks do sometimes fix themselves, but it isn't a risk worth taking. Airlocks occur when air becomes trapped in the hot water or central heating system. Vapour becomes caught in a high point of the pipework because the gas is less dense than the water in the system.
Leave the water running for about two minutes. Start from the lowest faucet in the house to the highest faucet. This allows the water pressure of the system to force all of the air from the pipes and out through the faucets.
Turn on the cold tap for up to 5 seconds and then turn it back off. At a sink in another room, turn the hot tap on and let it run. Repeat this process between 5 and 8 times.
The main cause of air in the water lines is water system maintenance. Cutting off the water supply for a period of time can allow air to enter the system. (Running faucets briefly usually resolves this problem.) Maintenance work on the water main may also introduce air into your system.
Air in water pipes will sound like a hiss or pop. Alternatively, the trapped air can cause loud gurgling and prolonged vibrating noises. Other sounds are loud noises and bangs emanating from the pipes; this clearly indicates air traveling in the pipes.

Most of the time, the air within your water pipes will not cause significant damage to your plumbing. It is only air, after all. However, trapped air can cause irritating problems such as: Excessive noise coming from your walls.
Air can actually get stopped up in pipes as a result of water line problems. If the banging in your pipes happens because of trapped air, then these sounds usually start immediately as a faucet is turned on, though you might hear a bubbling noise, too, as the air moves up and out.
Close all sinks and faucets.
You can leave 1 sink on to help equalize the pressure; any sink will work. Turn it on all the way. Otherwise, every other faucet must be turned off all the way in your home.
After all faucets are open, let the COLD WATER run for at least 30 minutes. During this time, also flush each toilet in your home 2 or 3 times. Running the COLD WATER should remove any old (stagnant) water which may contain higher concentrations of metals including lead, if it exists in your service line or plumbing.
It is always advisable to turn off your water supply before leaving for a vacation. Shutting off the water is crucial for protecting your home from water damage through leaks or burst pipes. The last thing you want is to find the house flooded and with a foul smell when you return.
If you're ready to soundproof your water pipes, you have two main options. You can either wrap the pipes with noise blocking materials or fill the cavities around the pipes with sound absorption products. Using both noise blocking and sound absorption materials can eliminate the sounds of pipes in your home.
Your pipes have what are called air chambers in them. Water hammer most commonly occurs when these air chambers have too much water in them. While the chambers regulate pressure and prevent water from forming waves in your pipes, too much air can suddenly cause the opposite to occur.
Popping Sounds
If you hear one or more loud “popping” sounds coming from a wall in the residence, this noise could indicate pipes bursting. When water freezes, it expands in size. Consequently, chunks of ice in a frozen plumbing system sometimes press against pipe, blocking the flow of water.
Signs of an Air Lock in Your Plumbing System
Sluggish Drains: If you notice the drains in your home are not draining as quickly as they normally do this could be the result of an air lock. If air is trapped in your system, it may cause gurgling, or bubbling in your toilets.
After that, simply let it sit for 14 days at room temperature (70F). If there are still bubbles in the airlock after 14 days let it sit for another few days, or at least until there is no bubbling for at least a minute or two. Once there is no activity in the airlock, fermentation is complete.
Air lock occurs when air gets trapped inside the drain line. This often happens when a vent pipe has become blocked. Air lock is a severe plumbing issue because it can constrict the flow of water inside your pipes, leading to sewage backups and potential pipe damage.
While frequently turning on and off the water can cause too much pressure to be put on the water pipes, turning it off doesn't harm the system.
Inspect and drain your water heater for longer trips.
If the unit is on the floor, check the area around it for any signs of water. Look over the pipes and valves and keep an eye out for any signs of corrosion, leaks, or other damage.
Realistically there is no danger to having the tank on with the water off. Especially since the tank works off water pressure to supply hot water. The tank pressure will be equal to your water pressure. If there is no inlet water pressure, there will be no outlet water pressure.
Begin the flushing procedure by opening the hot water taps in your bathroom(s). Open ALL hot water sink fixtures, hot water bathtub or shower fixtures. Next, open all other hot water fixtures, such as in kitchens, wet bars, etc. Run all of these hot water fixtures for 15 minutes, then shut the water off.
Discolored water comes from internal pipe rust and sediment getting stirred up. When this happens the water is still safe. However, the water may be unappealing, so we recommend that you wait until it clears before drinking it.
After resolving the plumbing issue, you will need to turn the main water valve back on. Leave one faucet on, at the highest level. Close all the other faucets around the home. Then, slowly and partially (about ½ the way to full) turn the valve on.
Your home's main shut-off valve is partially closed. There is a leak in your home's water main. Your home's PRV (pressure reducing valve) is faulty. There's a problem with the municipal water supply.
