For example, a NATO M855 5.56 x 45mm bullet with a 62-grain steel core will defeat a Level III armor system. It will, however, defeat a 5.56 x 45 mm bullet at 55 grain. Level III will defeat a 7.62 x 51mm 147 grain (M80) FMJ fired from an AK-47 style rifle.

Steel bulletproof materials are heavy duty, yet at just a few millimeters thick, extremely effective in stopping modern firearm rounds. The steel deforms under the stresses from the bullet's energy but prevents the rounds from reaching their intended targets.
Body armor that is only designed to offer protection from smaller caliber weapons will not give you protection from larger caliber weapons. A wearer should not hope that a vest will protect against more than it promises.

According to industry standards, this level of Kevlar is the best you can get for protecting yourself against blunt trauma injury. As you can see, at a distance of approximately 45 feet, a 9mm Glock pistol shot at a velocity of 1,100 feet per second was easily deflected by the vest.
Level III Body Armour
They consist of a carry vest with or without soft body armour into which the plates are inserted (ceramic, steel, etc.). Level III body armour vests must be able to withstand up to six shots from 7.62×51 NATO rounds. These vests are capable of stopping AK-47 rounds.
A fully jacketed bullet from an assault rifle, such as an AK-47, will go much further and can easily shoot through a brick wall.
Current soft body armor can stop most handgun rounds (which has been the case for roughly 15 years), but armor plates are needed to stop rifle rounds and steel-core handgun rounds such as 7.62×25mm.
While bulletproof or ballistic glass can weather shots from an AK-47 or shotgun, it will eventually succumb to an attacker when a certain amount of ammunition is expended.
We do NOT recommend using steel case ammo in your firearm unless it was designed for it (think Russian Cold War firearms like the AK-47). Remember that the higher quality the firearm is, the LESS tolerant it is of non-standard ammo.
