Refined grains: Refined grains contain carbs that can contribute to weight gain and worsen fatty liver. Grains that are highly processed are prepared by removing their fibre. Pastas, white bread, burger buns etc are all made with processed grains and must be avoided if you have fatty liver.
Refined sugars, and carbohydrates, for example, white bread, pasta, sugar, white rice, sweets and cakes, are all hard on the liver. Be sure to limit your consumption of anything that is made with white flour or sugar.
Choose fibre-rich whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat pasta, 100-per-cent whole grain breads and oatmeal, foods that raise blood glucose gradually, not quickly.
Aim for non starchy vegetables and whole fruits. Choose leaner proteins like fish, poultry, beans, and nuts. Limit red meats, cold cuts, bacon and other processed meats. Choose whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal or whole wheat pasta.
However, dietary whole tomato (tomato powder) would ameliorate the fatty liver disease independent of carotenoid cleavage enzymes. The protective effects of tomato may involve the regulation of sirtuin 1 and adiponectin production in hepatic and adipose tissue.
Fatty Liver Foods to Avoid
Steer clear of saturated fats, which lead to more fatty deposits in your liver. This includes: Poultry, except for lean white meat. Full-fat cheese.
Currently, it is recommended to limit the consumption of dairy products due to high levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, in order for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
French fries, wafers, burgers, and pizzas do no good to your liver. These food items are high in saturated fat or trans-fat content and are difficult to digest. In other words, your liver needs to work hard to process these food items.
It is a low-carbohydrate diet that reduces glycogen (energy stored in the liver), water and fat in the liver. The diet consists of proteins such as beef, pork, eggs, seafood or chicken, and non-starchy carbohydrates including foods like broccoli, cauliflower, leafy green vegetables.
Beans are a great source of protein and fiber. Some studies suggest that beans preserve liver health by preventing fat from accumulating in the liver, reducing the risk of a fatty liver.
Many don't know that eggs are a food that's good for fatty liver. This is because eggs are rich in choline, which plays a role in transporting and lowering LDL or “bad” cholesterol.
Sweetened breakfast cereals. Look for more grain based cereals or those sweetened with added fruit. Good examples include Weet Bix™, All Bran™, All Bran with Fruit™, Sultana Bran™ , traditional oats and other similar cereals.
Burgers, French fries, pizzas etc. are high in saturated fats which can lead to inflammation over time, cause cirrhosis and make it harder for the liver to do its job. They also elevate bad cholesterol and reduce the levels of good cholesterol.
Stir-fry with ½ cup cooked carrot and ½ cup cooked snow peas. Getting 5 serves of vegetables or more on a consistent basis is associated with a lower risk of fatty liver disease and a decrease in it's progression.
Many patients in our clinic ask us if they can consume eggs, since it is a widespread belief that people with a liver disease cannot eat them and even that they are harmful in healthy people. This is not true.
According to the American Liver Foundation, there are no medical treatments – yet – for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. So that means that eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are the best ways to both prevent liver damage from starting or reverse liver disease once it's in the early stages.
Replace saturated fats with healthier unsaturated fats, like those in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts. Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid foods and drinks with large amounts of sugars, especially fructose. These include sweetened soft drinks, sports drinks, sweetened tea, and juices.
Omega 3 found in fish like salmon, tuna and sardines are very important in improving the liver condition. It helps the break down of accumulated fat in the cells and reduces inflammation.
A 2019 review article notes that saturated fat intake increases the amount of fat around organs, including the liver. Beef, pork, and deli meats are all high in saturated fats. The AGA suggests that a person with fatty liver disease try to avoid these foods as much as possible.
Stay Away From Fatty Foods

Limit animal-based proteins: Dairy, cheese, butter, eggs, beef and pork all contain high amounts of saturated fat, which has been linked to high cholesterol, heart disease and fatty liver disease. Red meat, particularly cooked at high temperatures (such as when grilled), is associated with a fatty liver.
