Temazepam produces a variety of adverse nervous system effects, including restlessness, agitation, irritability, aggression, rage, and psychosis. Perhaps because it is likely to be used recreationally, temazepam has also been used to facilitate crime [7].
Other changes may be more unusual and extreme, such as confusion, worsening of depression, hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there), suicidal thoughts, and unusual excitement, nervousness, or irritability.
These serious side effects may also include delirium, paranoia, suicidal thoughts or actions, seizures, and difficulty breathing. Call your healthcare provider or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away if you get any of these serious side effects.
Serious side effects
the whites of your eyes turn yellow, or your skin turns yellow although this may be less obvious on brown or black skin (jaundice) – this can be a sign of liver problems. difficulty peeing or peeing less than usual. noticeable heartbeats (palpitations)
It works by increasing the levels of a calming chemical in your brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It comes as tablets or as a liquid that you swallow. Temazepam is available on prescription only.
Long-term use and misuse of temazepam can increase a person's risk of experiencing adverse effects, including physical dependence and an associated benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome when the medication is abruptly reduced or stopped.
Temazepam has a risk for abuse and addiction, which can lead to overdose and death. Taking this medication with alcohol or other drugs that can cause drowsiness or breathing problems (especially opioid medications such as codeine, hydrocodone) may cause very serious side effects, including death.
In general, temazepam should be used only for short periods, up to 2 weeks, unless advised by your doctor. If used over a long period, you can become dependent on temazepam. Check with your doctor for how long you can take temazepam.
Downsides
Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, oversedation, short-term memory loss, coordination problems, and confusion. May cause a drop in blood pressure, especially when going from a lying to a standing position. This may increase the risk of falls.
Other drugs such as some controlled medications (cough medicine, sleeping pills), steroids (often used for body-building), or diet pills containing amphetamines, have also been reported to cause psychosis as a side effect.
Certain drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines alter brain chemistry and can bring on paranoid thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This leads some researchers to believe that paranoia may be a biochemical disorder of the brain.
The third meta-analysis that included data from 12 prospective and retrospective cohort studies and case-control studies found that benzodiazepines can be a risk factor for the development of dementia (OR=1.38).
However, elderly patients are more likely to have unwanted effects (eg, severe drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, clumsiness, or unsteadiness) and age-related kidney, liver, or heart problems, which may require caution and an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving temazepam.
Benzodiazepine treatment can sometimes result in paradoxical reactions in susceptible individuals causing an increase in anxiety, agitation, hallucinations at the onset of sleep, aggressiveness, hyperactivity, irritability, hyperactive behavior, insomnia and exacerbation of seizures in epileptics.
Drug-induced hallucinations
People can experience hallucinations when they're high on illegal drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, LSD or ecstasy.
Shortage information
It has been identified that there are ongoing supply issues with temazepam tablets (10mg & 20mg). At present we understand this to be an ongoing issue for the remainder of 2022. It is expected that there will be intermittent supplies available during this time period.
Temazepam. Temazepam 10mg is approximately equivalent to diazepam 5mg. Temazepam is used short-term for the treatment of insomnia, and as pre-medication before minor surgical and investigative procedures.
Diazepam has an average rating of 8.5 out of 10 from a total of 823 ratings on Drugs.com. 82% of reviewers reported a positive effect, while 9% reported a negative effect. Temazepam has an average rating of 6.4 out of 10 from a total of 435 ratings on Drugs.com.
These are the most commonly used sleeping tablets in Australia and include temazepam (Temaze, Normison), zopiclone (Imovane) and zolpidem (Stilnox). They work by enhancing the activity of sleep pathways in the brain. They are recommended for short term use (less than 4 weeks). Melatonin (Circadin).
Temazepam is used to treat insomnia (trouble with sleeping). This medicine is for short-term (usually 7 to 10 days) use only.
In this study, we will first hypothesise that melatonin and temazepam are more effective than placebo on sleep quality among hospitalised older patients with sleeping problems and second melatonin is more effective than temazepam.
Temazepam, like other benzodiazepines, is rarely associated with serum ALT elevations, and clinically apparent liver injury from temazepam is extremely rare, if it occurs at all. There have been no case reports of symptomatic, acute liver injury from temazepam.
