Allow the baking soda to neutralise a stain overnight. 8 hours is beneficial but 12 hours is ideal. This solution works best to get smells out of the carpet, which you can then vacuum up and see and smell a noticeable difference.

We have never found that bicarb or baking soda (the same thing) to ever stain carpet. Some are also concerned that the vinegar will bleach carpet. There is little risk of this happening, even with woollen carpets.
Baking soda can take several hours to absorb odors. It's recommended that you allow at least 24 hours to remove odors. When you make this baking soda air freshener DIY, let it sit for 24 hours to notice a change.
Trust us on this; the vinegar will not remove stains that are embedded in your carpet and may, in fact, harm your carpet fibers. You'll end up with the same dirt you had before, but with the added problem of color fading and changes in carpet texture.
Combine 2 cups of warm water, 2 cups of white vinegar and (slowly add) 4 tablespoons of baking soda. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and apply to the stained area. Let the mixture sit for five minutes. Blot dry with a soft cloth.
Although mixing vinegar and baking soda is not considered dangerous, you should still avoid mixing these in a container. Vinegar is acidic and basic soda is basic, so the by-products are sodium acetate, carbon dioxide, and water that are not toxic.

Removing Smelly Stains With Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda on a wet stain and allow it to sit overnight to help remove both the stain and the odor. The exception to the paste "rule" is odor by itself (no pigmentation), which can often be removed just as well with dry baking soda and patience.

Spread the paste over all walls of the oven, but NOT on the heating elements. Leave the oven overnight for the best results. Wipe clean with a damp cloth to remove as much of the baking soda as possible.
It is important that you pour the vinegar first, and not the baking soda. Pouring vinegar on top of baking soda creates a much less controllable reaction than pouring in the proper order. The baking soda should fizzle and bubble. After the reaction is done, wipe and vacuum the vinegar and baking soda from the carpet.
